House on Solitude Creek in St. Michaels, Maryland by Robert M. Gurney, FAIA, Architect

Friday, March 25th, 2016

Article source: Robert M. Gurney, FAIA, Architect

The design of this house in St. Michaels, Maryland was greatly influenced by environmental regulations, zoning requirements and restrictive building codes specific to this site. The existing Dutch Colonial Style house, built in 1989, was located within a One-Hundred Foot Buffer Zone on Solitude Creek, a small estuary in this Maryland Eastern Shore town. A recently adopted Floodplain Management Ordinance mandated that no new structures be built within the Buffer Zone, and that all renovated or altered existing structures be updated to meet new zoning, building and environmental code requirements.

MOUNTAIN HOUSE in Pernink, Czech Republic by FAM Architekti (Feilden+Mawson Prague)

Friday, March 25th, 2016

Article source: FAM Architekti (Feilden+Mawson Prague)

The house is located 820 metres above sea level in the village of Pernink in a valley which is defined by a wild water stream. The prevailing western winds are tackled with a narrow gable end of the building. The house represents a hybrid typology of a small residential retreat and a guest house with facilities for skiing and nature hiking. The form of the house is largely defined by topography and the orientation towards views of surrounding woodland landscape. The external walls are made of 490 mm thick superinsulated rendered clay blocks which are also used for the main loadbearing wall. A sense of cave like protection against climate is supported by the journey from the entrance lobby to the upper floor living space which winds itself twice through this thick internal wall. The hierarchy of various internal ceiling heights is reflected through the exterior building form.

Casa Meztitla in Tepoztlán, México by EDAA

Sunday, March 20th, 2016

Article source: EDAA

“Casa Meztitla is an intervention of a natural scenario. It showcases the luxurious value of leisure, the tropical weather, the intense sunlight, the smells of nature, the over 500 year-old landscaped terraces and the ever-present rock mountain: El Tepozteco. It is context in itself. The house, built out of rough stone, crawls low under the trees, aligned with the vegetated-covered stone slopes. It is the creation of pure space within the natural space (Paz, O., 1987). It has an introverted living yet is continually open to its surroundings. Only two elements reveal its existence to the outside world: the colorful bougainvillea flowers showing randomly through the trees’ dense foliage, which mark the plot’s perimeter; and the massive and monolithic white box that emerges through the treetops.”
