Palo Alto Eichler Remodel in CA by Klopf Architecture

Thursday, February 11th, 2016

Article source: Klopf Architecture

Klopf Architecture updated a classic Eichler indoor-outdoor home to better suit the needs of a very busy family. The owners have two rather young kids and are also professionals with unpredictable, busy schedules. The house also had to accommodate the needs of two live-in nannies who cover for the parents when they’re indisposed. With those considerations in mind, the owners selected this house because it was larger than typical Eichlers because past additions had been already been made to the house. However, at the time of purchase the house was in poor condition and needed a complete gut remodel including all new roof, mechanical systems, and electrical, the replacement of dry-rotted siding and framing, some layout changes, and all new finishes. The house is super-insulated and has no need of air-conditioning.

A Raumplan house in MADRID, Spain by ESTUDIO ARQUITECTURA CAMPO BAEZA

Thursday, February 11th, 2016

Article source: ESTUDIO ARQUITECTURA CAMPO BAEZA

The house is located on a sloping plot with a landscape of distant horizon none other than Madrid’s western mountain range viewed from Camarines. At ground level it doesn’t appear to be anything special, but as we go up we feast our eyes on a panoramic view of the urban landscape of the east of Madrid. From the four towers to the left to the Madrid tower to the right. Beautiful, and curious also.  Logically the more public parts of the house will be at the upper levels to frame and enjoy the stunning views.

Roncesvalles Accessible House in Toronto, Canada by Solares Architecture

Wednesday, February 10th, 2016

Article source: Solares Architecture

In 2013, a couple in their 50s, came to Solares Architecture with an important request – to transform their 1911 Toronto semi-detached home into a beautiful, modern, and, most importantly, accessible house.

In 2006, the husband and father of the household had been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and was soon in need of a mobility device. Once the family began looking into buying an accessible home, they realized how few there were on the market. Usually, accessible houses are built-as-needed, and the option of buying one is hugely expensive. Even a bungalow would need major renovation work to become fully accessible. After assessing these costs, the family decided to instead renovate their existing home, bought in 1989.

Tuesday, February 9th, 2016

Article source: SUPPOSE DESIGN OFFICE Co., Ltd

This project is for a family of five in the middle of a small mountain where is able to overlook Mt. Sakurajima beyond the Kagoshima bay. The scenery of Kagoshima bay could say just amazing. It would be great if we could design architecture that connects the beautiful scenery and us instead of divides this relationship by itself.

Summer house Midlaren in Drenthe, Netherlands by Kwint architects

Tuesday, February 9th, 2016

Article source: Kwint architects

We were asked to design a simple summer home. The result is a straight forward house, of rich and spatial design in map and cross section. Internally, it seems entirely to consist of two separate houses, similar to a bronze sculpture of Giacometti entitled: Figure in a Box between Two Boxes which are Houses.

Friday, February 5th, 2016

Article source: Architects GG-loop

The city and its various parts can be seen as a music score, the edifices acting as notes played by different instruments simultaneously. A melody is created by, what the Romans used to call Genius Loci, the spirit of the place, the conductor of the city.

The client’s brief for this house was simple. Functionally, to maximize usable area and to incorporate greenery.  Aesthetically, to use travertine copiously as an architectural finish. Inspired by the Italian urban-scape during his travels, so too would travertine express this house.
