Tea Houses in Silicon Valley, California by Swatt | Miers Architects

Friday, December 9th, 2016

Article source: Swatt | Miers Architects

The idea for the tea houses originated years ago, when the owner and his young daughter explored the remote hills surrounding their Silicon Valley home, discovering an idyllic setting below a ridge, under a grove of large California Live Oak trees. At first, the family thought the setting would be perfect for a tree house. Years later, after the 6000 square foot main house was extensively remodeled, the vision was realized as three individual tea houses, places where one could simply retreat into nature.

Résidence Belcourt in Québec, Canada by Atelier Pierre Thibault

Friday, December 9th, 2016

Article source: Atelier Pierre Thibault

The Residence Belcourt is a typical Canadian house built in 1974. Clients underwent major renovations in order to optimize the functionality of the residence while maximizing the entry of natural light. Only the overall volume, the exterior stone walls and the pool were kept from the original house. The project now shows a concept. The side walls integrate services and storage in order to free the heart of the ground floor. New living spaces are organized around a sculptural plywood staircase. The new organization of spaces promotes family life within large communicating areas. The addition of a pergola in cedar slats and a generous terrace at the rear allows to offer outdoor living spaces that extend to the garden and to facilitate access to the inner courtyard.

Aroeira III House in Almada, Portugal by ColectivArquitectura

Friday, December 9th, 2016

Article source: ColectivArquitectura

Situated in a dense pine forest, the hexagonal plot had no references to the choice of location for the construction. It was conditioned by ‘occupation zone’ defined by the Master Plan – a circle of 12.50 m radius centered at hexagon that defines the perimeter of the plot.

The Creek House in Queensland, Australia by Shaun Lockyer Architects

Friday, December 9th, 2016

Article source: Shaun Lockyer Architects

The Creek House draws its inspiration from the local vernacular of brick and tin houses on a large leafy block in the Kenmore Hills. The design involved a significant re-invigoration and extension to what was a very simple but promising house. The new work opens the primary living spaces out to the north offering views and engagement with the natural creek environs which offers an enviable sanctuary from the city nearby. A rich but simple palette of stone and timber engages with the natural surroundings, whilst the sheer white walls offer a minimal and clean counterpoint to the immediate context. The outcome is a reflection of a wonderful collaboration between trusting clients that have known us for a long time, and their son who expertly executed the build.

This house is a detached house, size of 148.76㎡, built in Ilsan, Gyeong-gi Province.

General floor plan for three-member-family consists of the main living room, three bedrooms, two bathrooms, one dress room, kitchen and a workshop; a detached house of 148.76. This house, so called a Light – House, represents the characteristic of owner’s occupation. The land condition for this Light-House was created by land division of about twenty-house-size. Five houses are already completed, and others are currently under construction. Light-House is aims for something higher than a physical housing where you simply eat and sleep; it pursues co-existing of nature and humanity through continuous relationship via interior and exterior of the building. Predicting this region to be crowded with houses in a near future, Light-House is designed to protect owner’s private life from others’ eyes. The three land sides that are touched by other residents’ are equally divided so that they can be entirely surrounded by the exterior wall of the housing. For the last side, an open view of whole window is installed towards the beautiful landscape, created by the thorough design of terraced heights of the housing complexes. Moreover, in accordance with owner’s lifestyle, Light-House is designed for the frequent use of outdoor space in warm seasons. We hope our residents to have a peaceful and protected space where you can enjoy your rest in an outdoor space and courtyard, separated from others’ view.

Ultramodern Casa Son Vida in Mallorca, Spain by Marcel Wanders studio

Thursday, December 8th, 2016

Article source: Marcel Wanders studio

Roots are attached to tradition but trees are directions to the future.

The first full residential project of Marcel Wanders, the 850m2 residence embodies Marcels’ vision in each of its curved corners. The conversion and extension of the Mediterranean sixties villa, gave birth to a friendly meeting between old and new. The subtle mix of classical and modern references is visible through the entire villa, from the classic profiled wall lining the curved space to the newly custom designed cupboards in straight yet classic lines. A unique atmosphere emerges as space is turning into a playground for reliefs and surfaces. House of contrasts and love between past and present, Casa Son Vida is “unavoidably exuberant and unabashedly outrageous.”
