Moor Street Residence in Fitzroy, Australia by Andrew Maynard Architects

Friday, October 30th, 2015

Article source: Andrew Maynard Architects

How do you create a home in 4.5m? It’s tricky, but a lot of fun.

A family of four had lived in this modest, ageing house for almost eight years. As the children neared their teenage years something had to be done. Abandoning their home and moving elsewhere was not an option as the family was an important part of a thriving community.

“House in hieidaira” in Shiga, Japan by Tato architects

Friday, October 30th, 2015

Article source: Tato architects

Located in a rural part of Japan on the flank of Mount Hiei north of Kyoto, this house was designed for an artist who required a studio, living space as well as to accommodate his parents. The house has been designed as a collection of three independent but related structures that reference the local vernacular of predominantly small pitched roof cottages. It was thought that to try to accommodate all of the required programmatical functions in one structure would result in a too large building. Also there were concerns from the planning authority that activities in the studio may result in disturbance to neighbouring residents.

Woodland Residences in Austin, TX by Derrington Building Studio

Saturday, October 24th, 2015

Article source: Derrington Building Studio

WDLD_Project Description

Woodland is a small residential community nestled among a grove of large trees in a neighborhood that is just minutes outside of downtown Austin, Texas.  The development started with a simple program of four houses, but quickly became complex through the site’s general conditions and restrictions. Unusual property lines, a steep bluff, and an abundance of old-growth trees squeezed the buildable area for the project. This, in turn, presented privacy and view concerns given the close proximity of each house to the surrounding trees, as well as one other. Along with these issues, permitting violations from a previous owner had to be overcome.

In working with a limited budget and economical materials, we placed extra attention on massing and fenestration. This particular house is 850 square feet of living space and includes two bedrooms and one and half baths. Simplicity of form with dynamic elements and limited use of color creates an impactful form without being overly dramatic. , Image Courtesy © Craig Washburn

SHAFT HOUSE in Toronto, Canada by rzlbd [Reza Aliabadi]

Saturday, October 24th, 2015

Article source: rzlbd [Reza Aliabadi]

Introduction

“Design belongs to everyone.” Says Reza Aliabadi, the architect of “Shaft House”.

The Shaft House idea was derived from the architect’s concerns about the affordability of design.  Walking down on Danforth and Woodbine avenues in Toronto, an affordable neighborhood with not too many different building types one might not expect to see a contemporary building in the area let alone a contemporary house. “This neighborhood is full of houses that look all the same. People think it is expensive to own designs. But Toronto deserves to have more of these” says the architect while pointing out to a house in Lumsden Avenue that looks fairly surreal comparing to the surroundings. Traditional modeled dwellings with their brick façades are allowing rusted steel and untreated wood panels, mysteriously covering two small windows, to be an unexpected exciting discovery in their neighborhood.
