Silver House in Zante Island, Greece by DWEK ARCHITECTURE + PARTNERS s.c./s.p.r.l.u.

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2015

Article source: DWEK ARCHITECTURE + PARTNERS s.c./s.p.r.l.u.

Kefallinia. Cephalonia. The island was even described by Homer in ancient times. Its backbone culminates in a peak 1,628m high, in the midst of the Ionian Sea. Seen from the mainland, it surges out of the blue depths in an intense light, often coiffed with a veil of clouds. So when the opportunity arose to build a house facing this spectacle, the choice was obvious. The subject would of course be the island, framed by the house. From the initial sketches until its completion, the plans were developed around the view. From the terraces, the sitting room, the dining room, kitchen, bedrooms and bathrooms, the living space was oriented towards this fascinating seascape, which the architecture emphasises, making it even more theatrical.

This project was intended for a flat, sparsely wooded site. Completely in stone, the original house dated from the early 19th century. Its proportions were balanced but the extension made in the mid-20th century was a bit chaotic.

Article source: MIRKO FRANZOSO ARCHITETTO

Living deep in nature, in complete harmony with the elements of the area and respecting the environment where we spend our time for meditation are the fundamental principles that brought to the realization of this house among trees. The rooms forming this house among trees are first of all places where to refuge yourself from nature, but at the same time where to rest and enjoy it fully.

House in Shfela, Israel by Dan and Hila Israelevitz Architects

Sunday, September 20th, 2015

Article source: Dan and Hila Israelevitz Architects

Two level house, ground floor and basement. The building’s concept is an integration with the natural landscape in the area and in the plot, while creating a dramatic entrance façade that is still restrained and mysterious toward the street. Instead of highlighting the large and regular windows, and the doors, the idea was to hint at the building by creating two concrete beams with a line of trees between them.

bm Modular One in Washington, D.C. by Robert M. Gurney, FAIA, Architect

Sunday, September 20th, 2015

Article source: Robert M. Gurney, FAIA, Architect

A successful builder / developer with a history of constructing modular houses purchased a lot in a desirable neighborhood near Washington, D.C. with the intention of building a spec house.  When a potential buyer expressed interest in the lot, the developer proposed a modular house as a solution to a tight budget and time constraints.  However, the craftsman and colonial style modular houses typically built by the developer did not appeal to the potential client, who desired a light-filled, modern house.
