House by the Lake in Tyumen, Russia by Brusnika

Sunday, September 5th, 2021

Article source: Brusnika

House by the Lake is a residential area project designed by the development company Brusnika in Tyumen, Siberia. The plot is located in the vicinity of residential clusters dating from the 1980-90s, random low-rise houses and modern housing estates. It is a promising area with well-developed social, commercial and recreational amenities.

The masterplan aims to develop the area as well as the lake. The key concept is living in the city while enjoying the countryside around. A small, shallow and boggy Tikhoye lake was much wider up to the 1970s, but affected by chaotic urban development, it gradually shrank. While designing the project, professional advice on the lake restoration was obtained from hydrologists, ecologists and dendrologists. Currently marshy parts of the shores and floor are being cleared, the area around the lake planted with new species, and the lake stocked with fish. According to the masterplan, the shores and the small park linking the quarter to the lake will also be landscaped.

West Half in Washington by ODA

Sunday, September 5th, 2021

Article source: ODA

ODA’s process, just like their design, is fractal by nature – thinking about how cities are made up of small units of life, that operate independently yet are bound by a shared community. This concept has manifested in an iconic new structure in Washington DC’s Navy Yard. West Half, a newly-completed multi-family residential complex, houses 465 apartments, nearly 1000 people, in a single square block. And yet the internal circulation of the building, the curated multi-level amenities, rich access to outdoor space and the cascading nature of the facade creates a connection at the street level and gives the building a transparent, approachable feel, while the bright yellow underbelly of the cantilevers delivers a subliminal layer of color theory 101: Happiness.

Four Houses in One in Brno, Czech Republic by Kuba & Pilař architekti

Monday, June 28th, 2021

Article source: Kuba & Pilař architekti

The building is located in a quiet residential Masaryk district, full of quality pre-war functionalist architecture. The volume and spatial solution is based on the character and proportions of the nearest buildings. Residential complex consists of four blocks of different sizes apartment buildings which protrude above the terrain from a common underground base. The set of buildings thus naturally fits into its surroundings. The site with a south-west orientation and an attractive view over the Brno Exhibition Centre to the Kohoutovice forest was the reason for the maximum orientation and the opening of the residential complex into this direction. The apartment buildings descend along the slope, their height decreases towards the southern tip of the plot.

Ensemble immobilier Mouzaia in Paris, France by CANAL architecture

Tuesday, June 1st, 2021

Article source: CANAL architecture

58, rue de Mouzaia, Paris 19th: at this address, a representative work of brutalism was delivered in 1974, co-signed by Claude Parent and André Remondet. However, after 45 years of existence, the building had lost its visual strength: blackened surfaces, erosion, bared irons… In charge of transforming this office building into a housing complex, Canal architecture workshop (Patrick Rubin) seized this opportunity to restore and reveal a dense and strong architecture, while giving it the amenity that suited its new function. This case study is an example of reversibility, a notion that Canal also defends for today’s architecture.
