52 COUNCIL FLATS IN NANTERRE, France by Colboc Franzen & Associés

Tuesday, November 18th, 2014

Article source: Colboc Franzen & Associés

The Hoche ecodistrict is rising from the ground on old industrial sites. It has to mediate between the scale of the Chemin-de-l’Ile park and the A14 motorway that cuts through it, and the far smaller scale of an area of detached houses dating back to the 1930s. The two plots selected for the development are a good illustration of the challenge. The housing is divided into housing blocks that are look onto public space and face the eight-storey towers between them and the motorway and a square, but in the centre of the block are houses of the same dimensions as the existing detached houses.

Harlem Community Rooftop Farm in New York by EOA/Elmslie Osler Architect

Thursday, October 9th, 2014

Article source: Elmslie Osler Architect

Access to affordable housing and fresh, healthy food are often scarce in New York City. We have designed the Harlem Community Rooftop Farm to help alleviate the dearth of these basic needs in one Manhattan Neighborhood. This combined affordable housing development and community garden also provides much-needed green space and a reprieve from the busy streets below. This community garden in Harlem redevelops the existing roofscape above Citarella to include farming that is publically accessible via a wide stair leading up from 126th Street. The stair is constructed of concrete and reclaimed redwood marking the transition from sidewalk to elevated garden. Once at the top there is a deck of reclaimed redwood shaded by small fruit trees that leads to a gradual downward slope with spacious low steps and benches for sitting, gathering and observing busy 125th Street. Rooftop planter boxes that are open for use by the community are supplemented by vertical farming walls which are maintained by residents of the affordable housing units in the adjacent building. The vertical farming panels are made of stainless steel and are accessible via balconies running the entire length of the south-west facing façade.

Article source: Daycare Nursery and collective housing

The founding act of the project begins with the landscape.  It is rare in Paris to be able to take advantage of panoramic views without vis-à-vis.  Yet here the site overlooks two distant landscapes:  the city and the suburbs.

PRD1 in Le Havre, France by PHILIPPE DUBUS ARCHITECTES

Wednesday, September 10th, 2014

Article source: PHILIPPE DUBUS ARCHITECTES

Located in the Docks du Havre (76) area, this private ownership, 65-unit congregate housing project renews the venue’s gradually disappearing authenticity. It highlights a few snatches of the old, e.g. this small corner-building that the new building encloses, while expressing its contemporaneous signature with concrete and metallic casing. Following on an initial housing project on the same site, this latest project continues the idea of varying housing types: town houses, stacked dwellings and congregate housing, all of which comes together on three visual levels with unified metallic casing that magnifies Le Havre’s maritime light.

GSNA in Paris, France by PHILIPPE DUBUS ARCHITECTES

Monday, September 8th, 2014

Article source: PHILIPPE DUBUS ARCHITECTES

Urban yet bucolic, this project rounds out the urban renewal of the Courghain district in Dunkirk’s suburbs. The venue is divided between the very city-oriented square of the same name and a watergang (a small Dutch-like canal). All the more so because the city’s urban planner called for facades on each of the surrounding streets and blocks on the square while the project only contains 57 social housing units.
