The Ningbo Haishu Waterfront district is an island, surrounded by water on all four sides, offering a unique topographical setting in which to reimagine urban life in 21stcentury China. Contemporary Chinese cities have entered a new era of 21st-century urbanism. Old strategies for developing new districts no longer work: cities cannot rely on instant buildings, and iconic projects no longer beget their own economies.

Radical Tabula Rasa
In 2006, Atelier Kempe Thill is commissioned to design Block 10 in the Moerwijk neighborhood of The Hague with eighty-eight apartments and twenty-seven terraced houses as the result of a negotiation procedure by Vestia, the largest building corporation in the Netherlands.
Moerwijk is a typical restructuring area with residential buildings from the nineteen-sixties, as also exist in many large cities in the Netherlands. Also here, the city and housing corporations agreed on the comprehensive demolition of the entire area rather than renovation of the existing buildings.

Located in the Gramercy Park neighborhood of Manhattan, 160 East 22nd Street is a 21-story, 84-unit condominium apartment building. In addition to luxury residences, the building includes ground loor retail space. The design is based on a modern interpretation of the elegant and timeless classic pre-war apartment buildings in the neigh-borhood. The limestone clad building’s massing is sculpted to incorporate a 24’ cantilever, and punctuated with alternating deep set fenestration pattern.

The southern part of the newly built Champs-Meunier compound holds 3 buildings. These are scattered following a terrace scheme and sit in a rural context whilst still standing on the border of the city center. The 47 flats are each composed of 3 to 5 rooms and are transversal. The flats are distributed around a central core, allowing the scheme to be simple and efficient. Moreover, large balconies outspread the living areas, thus permitting the interior / exterior boundary to vanish.

This is a project looking for another architectural alternative to the housing market located in the innovative cities that are currently being developed.
The building site that is located in the Innovation City is located in the T intersection. The location of shopping mall is good, but for the location of the house is unsecure of the privacy. To solve this problem, we use the cube block as a screen device on the residential sector. As a commercial building, at night, it had an unique lighting feeling and gaining awareness became an advantage. Also, it’s located about 15m lower side of the road and the opposite side has an advantage of the view of urban landscapes and mountains. Considering this surroundings, at the 1st floor was external court and the entire floor was glass mass to give an enjoyment to the users. But, the biggest problem is that if the street block is form as a commercial type house only, then the 2nd floor and 3rd floor has a problem of lighting. A house should to be bright and naturally ventilated to maintain comfort. To secure the privacy of 1st to 3rd floor to the south, we formed a cube block as a screen device and on 3rd floor, we made sky garden in external court for the lighting and natural ventilation. Especially, on 3rd floor, between 2 external court can be a living room, dining room, or home bar and by placing a wall in kitchen, it can be an independent space or one space. Also, in this multi-purpose space, we installed a folding door around the external court to make as a another one space. The kitchen is the center space when the owner of third floor generation comes. The kitchen communicates with the sky garden, multi-purpose space, and living room. The attic separates the 2 areas into 2 spaces and make as a connecting passages. This connecting passage connects the attic with the bridge between the external court and the external deck and connects with the sky garden too. Through the center of the sky garden, various spatial program can be form and hopefully there will be new ways of communicating amongst family members too.

On a 12.5 meters wide by 25 meters long site, 8 apartments were planned, 2 for each floor of the building. They were to be arranged longitudinally and divided by three voids: a central cube for services and two lateral ones for vine-covered terraces that would work as filters between the public and private spaces.

The Melbourne Residences, is a 20 storey building consisting of 200 units in Brisbane’s Southbank. It contains retial and rooftop club including gym, pool, cinema and dining room. The tower plan is driven by the desire to maximise the oblique views from the units to the river and CBD. This results in a stepping form which maximises the number of units with access to the East. We derived inspiration from the ripple patterns created by the wind. This ripple orders the stepping of the façade reflecting the interplay of the environment on the façade. The tower has a unique undulating façade which ranges from zero to 4m. These facades contain operable glass screens to create wintergardens. These wintergardens provide a second skin to maximise thermal efficiency and reduce energy use. Melbourne street is becoming a fashionable retail address. We designed a 4 storey retail façade. Retail connects the street via a through site link to Fish Lane which is being revitalised by art installations and cafes as a bohemian centre. The clients brief was to create a superior residential address and activate the street with world class retail.

Light-House is located in Hsinchu County, Taiwan. This multi-storied residential building block is designed in consideration of common Taiwanese terrace style houses. This project seeks to rethink the fundamentals of this particular housing model and intends to reinvigorate its underlining idea as “Lian-dong” (describing a continuous housing block) and “Tou-tian” (terrace houses describing buildings with roof spaces open to the sky) in the design approach.

Zecc designed an apartment building with 46 apartments commissioned by housing association Mooiland Vastgoed. The project concerns social housing for people with a need for limited residential care. The building is part of an ensemble of connected buildings and is designed to accent its height in the area. The building has a basement of curved masonry with a broad main entrance area. From the ground up the sculptural masonry transforms itself into an angular freeform with emphasized vertical elements.

London-based practice Architects of Invention (AI) has submitted a design proposal for 500 residential units in Birmingham’s Digbeth area.
The practice was approached by Chinese private equity fund PGC- Capital whose The Jewel Court, 77 one-two bed luxury apartments, is already on site in Birmingham.
