STUDENT HALL OF RESIDENCE + FAMILY HOMES in PARIS, France by Babled Nouvet Reynaud Architectes

Friday, May 30th, 2014

Article source: Babled Nouvet Reynaud Architectes

Street, entrances, depth: the genesis of a coherent spatial arrangement

The project has chosen to link the high density imposed by the depth of the plots to the framework created by the buildings retained on the street. The system of entrances, creating a flow into the existing buildings as well as through to the full depth of the block, is the point of departure for spaces that stretch into the far reaches of the site, the first link in a chain extending to create this spatial arrangement.

Herold – Social Housing100 in Paris, France by Jakob + Macfarlane

Friday, May 23rd, 2014

Article source: Jakob + Macfarlane

In the context of the reconversion of the ancient site of the hospital Hérold, conceived by Philippe Madec in Paris 19th arrondissement, Jakob + MacFarlane establish/design three mineral forms standing free on a kind of slope triangular island planted with some trees. These three forms, grow like roots on portions of the territory that have been freed by the constraints of the site : protected trees, the ancient existing wall of the beltway, the size and prospect, the not buildable surfaces or the difference in height. Their shapes are at the same time the result of these constraints and a matrix structure generated by an irregular grid on the floor.

Article source: PICHARCHITECTS

The project of  “Santa Madrona” deals with an urban space, where two apartment blocks with an affordable renting price have to be placed, nearby a small public square of the Gracia neighbourhood of Barcelona. The intervention had to place also, a public equipment on its ground floor, with a specific area and  some specific leisure spaces. So then, the project had this interesting challenge to propose in one hand apartment blocks with an affordable renting price, with all the facilities that were needed, an urban space intimately bounded to the block’s life and an equipment that will promote the so necessary mixture of uses.

Sierra Bonita Housing in West Hollyood, California by Patrick Tighe Architecture

Tuesday, May 13th, 2014

Article source: Patrick Tighe Architecture

The design challenge of this project—the first all-affordable mixed-use development in West Hollywood and the first designed and completed according to the city’s new Green Building Ordinance—was to fit the desired 42 accessible units on a 13,000-square-foot site and within a 50-foot height limit. The design used minimal exterior setbacks and reversed the typical unit layout—locating the bedrooms along the interior building courtyard and the living areas on the street side—to capitalize on views and natural light.
