SOCIAL HOUSING RESIDENCE in VAULX-EN-VELIN, FRANCE by PETITDIDIERPRIOUX ARCHITECTES

Friday, September 25th, 2015

Article source: PETITDIDIERPRIOUX ARCHITECTES

This new social housing residence comprising 92 apartments aims to replace the “Mas du Taureau” hostel which is programmed to be demolished. It is located in an urban development zone within which no other works have yet begun. Intended to house former migrant workers, single-parent families and isolated individuals, the residence must accompany a new page of their life and develop the identity of the future neighborhood. To favor the appropriation of the setting by its inhabitants and its acceptance by the neighbors, the architecture moves away from the codes that generally define the image held by hostels and particular care is taken inside the building to organize the routes of the residents. Laid out as a right angle, the building offers a vast interior garden. The assembly of three small buildings is a pleasant neighborhood scale and allowed the lessor to rehouse former neighbors on the basis of affinities. A specific approach is proposed for each side of the building: the north glazed façade provides transparency between street and garden, placing emphasis on the movements on the access decks. Vertical elements forming fins optimize the provision of natural light and enliven the façade. The rhythmic continuity and the effect of slightly offset projecting fascias assure the link between the two façades giving onto the streets.

Toh Crescent in Singapore by HYLA Architects

Tuesday, September 8th, 2015

Article source: HYLA Architects

In most typical residential developments the living spaces face central communal areas. This blurs the distinction between private and public spaces and results in a loss of privacy for the residents. In this design, we have sought to properly define the public and private spaces and make a clear separation between them.

Quarter of Nations in Hamburg, Germany by Gerber Architekten

Thursday, June 11th, 2015

Article source: Gerber Architekten

The ‘Quarter of Nations‘ in Hamburg’s Wilhelmsburg district was created in connection with the IBA 2013 – a model intercultural housing project intended to house more than 1,700 inhabitants originating from 30 different nations. Gerber Architekten extended a traditional workers’ housing development with two new buildings that respond to the most fundamental elements of the existing architecture and reinterpret them by incorporating sculptural head-end volumes, whilst simultaneously reconciling them with the high energy efficiency requirements of a passive building. There are a total of 75 publicly-funded housing units, of different sizes and offering different forms of accommodation; they combine accommodation types suitable for single persons, couples and families, thereby ensuring an appropriately-mixed social profile for the ‘Quarter of Nations‘.

SOCIAL HOUSING AND KINDERGARTEN IN PARIS, France by GAETAN LE PENHUEL ARCHITECTES

Sunday, May 24th, 2015

Article source: GAETAN LE PENHUEL ARCHITECTES

Urban resources

Paris’s 11th arrondissement combines the city’s highest population density with one of its lowest green space totals. Set back from Boulevard Richard Lenoir, this large plot has been pre-emptively acquired by the City of Paris with a view to creating, along Impasse Truillot, a new public garden edged with social housing units and a crèche for 60 infants. The ultimate aim is a major green strip running from the forecourt of the church of Saint Ambroise to Boulevard Richard Lenoir. Whatever comes of this handsome urban project, currently awaiting the acquisition and demolition of business premises, the building fit with the size of the planned park.

DENSE CITY in Paris, France by Fresh Architectures

Thursday, May 21st, 2015

Article source: Fresh Architectures

Our project has been designed as a unique object, both imposing and securing in comparison with the scale of the neighboring buildings. Its geometry makes it both streamlined and easy to locate. The same material has been chosen to cover the roof and the façades, which gives the building a monolithic and distinctive look. It has been treated in order to be a part of the existing urban environment. As an example, the tiles generate an interesting surface finish by producing both a mineral and monolithic effect. In addition, the glazed surface finish diminishes the deposits from the air pollution. The façades are designed to clean themselves naturally with the rain.
