Thursday, March 20th, 2014

Article source: Henning Larsen Architects

The new Helsinki Central Library is uniquely situated in the historic city centre, with direct views to the downtown area and Töölönlahti Bay. The design of the new building is inspired by this exceptional location, incorporating and intertwining the park and city in a sweeping gesture reminiscent of a yin yang symbol.

Saturday, March 15th, 2014

Article source: Dan Hanganu + Côté Leahy Cardas architects

The Monique-Corriveau Library, housed in the Saint-Denys-du-Plateau church, is an exception, and in a rather unusual way. It is a tribute to the career—exceptional for her time—of the Quebec writer whose name it honours. This mother of 10 children, to each of whom she dedicated a book, was the author of numerous children’s books and winner of several literary awards.

A key project in the heart of the Belgian city of Roeselare is the renewal of the inner-city nucleus formed by Noordstraat, Ooststraat and Henri Horriestraat. The city centre will be structurally strengthened by enlarging a modern centre of knowledge and learning, developing additional commercial premises and building new homes. The renewal project is situated right in the centre of the city. It is an integral part of the main shopping precinct that stretches between the Saint Michael Church and the Grote Markt (market square) on the one hand and the railway station on the other.

Mediatheque in Mont de Marsan, France by ARCHI5

Friday, February 28th, 2014

Article source: ARCHI5

The Media Library is a strong cultural symbol for the Marsan urban area. It is a place of discovery, gatherings and exchanges for its users. It is a visible, distinctive building without being overpowering.

The Media Library stands in the middle of the Bosquet barracks, and care has been taken to augment the dialogue with the place’s strong architectural whole. With its clean envelope of pure geometric lines, a 197 ft x 197 ft square, the building complies with the classical layout yet contrasts with its austerity by offsetting the system with a corner opening onto the city. Its façades reflect the surrounding barracks like a respectful, deferential mirror.

Winds of Change Library by Michael Jantzen

Tuesday, February 18th, 2014

Article source: Michael Jantzen

The Winds of Change Library is a conceptual design proposal for an earth friendly library powered by the wind. This multi level structure would have a large garden with trees, plants, and grass covering the entire two level roof. The roof garden would help to keep the library cooler in the summer, and warmer in the winter. It would also function as a safe and comfortable place for the visitors to read outdoors. The roof garden is also designed to capture and store rainwater for use in and around the library.
