Friday, October 30th, 2015

Article source: Chevalier Morales Architectes

Following an architectural competition in 2011, the firm Chevalier Morales Architectes received the mandate to expand, redesign and bring to compliance the old Lachine borough library, dating back to 1974. This neighbourhood library not meeting user and employee needs anymore, the architects Stephan Chevalier and Sergio Morales made this location a 21st century library: attractive, luminous and stimulating conversation. The project aimed for a LEED certification as well as to be an example of sustainable development principles.

MEDIA LIBRARY ST PAUL in Ile de la Réunion, France by Peripheriques Architects

Tuesday, September 29th, 2015

Article source: Peripheriques Architects

The new media library structures “the gateway” of Saint-Paul city. Its location choice comes as an urban answer to the need of a strong identity in the landscape scale. This building has to become a cultural landmark, through information and training, as well as a visual one through its architecture. Located between sea and mountain, the building shape is a 34m side cube. The
idea of an urban landmark is enhanced by a strong aesthetic vocabulary of the volume related to the ”book” media: façades are structured by a stack of wavy lines reminiscent of the book pages pattern. Those “pages” are solar shading systems vibrating around the construction.

Article source: MAYU architects+

An international school strives to nurture its students to become world citizens through a community of teachers and classmates of various nationalities as well as diverse educational methods. The Kaohsiung American School (KAS), as such an entity, has thrived for more than twenty-five years by attracting talented teachers and students alike even though it has negotiated with limited physical presence because of relocations and use of older facilities. By leasing the former Victory Elementary Public School site from the Kaohsiung City government, KAS finally has a permanent home at the current site not far from the Lotus Pond, a famed tourist attraction. The new school built on this site is well thought out and curriculum based to better meet the needs of all students.

West Berkeley Public Library in California by Harley Ellis Devereaux

Sunday, August 30th, 2015

Article source: Harley Ellis Devereaux

The City of Berkeley sought to construct a library that would both serve as a model for sustainable design as well as a community hub for its culturally diverse neighborhood. With the existing library spatially out of date for contemporary requirements and future adaptability, the design team recommended the construction of a new zero net energy (ZNE) structure. Extensive study had revealed the embodied energy required to construct a new ZNE facility would be offset by the ongoing cost of maintaining the existing structure within one year’s time.
