Europan 13 Community, a sustainable building in Barcelona, Spain by Archilea architecture

Sunday, March 20th, 2016

Article source: Archilea architecture

The strategy: The project stems from the desire to decline the concept of sustainability, specific in this competition, in three distinct areas: environmental sustainability, social sustainability and economic sustainability. The stated goal is to create a system in which the three fields can interact and integrate in order to reach equilibrium without one of the three areas of the system, which normally happens, can take precedence over others. To create this system, one of the aspects taken into consideration was the ability to move away from the traditional housing system in which the threshold of building represents a limit insideoutside trying to include in the own building a whole series of activities that can aggregate functions and increase the opportunities to meet and socialize the inhabitants. The basic idea is that the internal layout of the building is transformed into a “public square” open to the outside integrating, as mentioned, functions traditionally handled from outside and defining the building, in fact, as an hybrid: this combination of features provides the possibility to the residents of the building to meet, socialize and discuss transforming the whole neighborhood in a community, overcoming the possible socio-economic and cultural-linguistic differences.

La Grande Mosaïque in Caen, France by MVRDV

Tuesday, February 16th, 2016

Article source: MVRDV

La Grande Mosaïque, MVRDV’s project in Caen, France, has been in development for two years and has already seen a series of projects under construction within the masterplan, with many more breaking ground in the coming years. The 600 hectare masterplan tackles the problems caused by the area’s heavy industry and rapid de-industrialisation, integrating the historic aspects of the site with the natural environment. The development includes a mix of housing, offices, mixed-use buildings, public spaces and infrastructure; all stitched together and laid out using a spatial planning tool, ‘the offset’, created by MVRDV. In a move to engage locals, an exhibition of MVRDV’s works and Le Grand Mosaïque is open to public viewing in ‘Le Pavillon’, an exhibition space in the old city port, until the 13th March 2016.

Timmerhuis in Rotterdam, Netherlands by OMA

Thursday, December 24th, 2015

Article source: OMA

For Rotterdam’s Timmerhuis, a new building for the city hall that accommodates municipal services, offices, and residential units, OMA conceived a modular building with repeated units gradually set back from the street as they rise into two irregular peaks. The building’s composition of smaller cells creates an impressive, complex form when viewed from Coolsingel, one of Rotterdam’s main arteries, and allows for subtlety and adaptability as the new building meets the Stadstimmerhuis (a municipal building, from 1953), which surrounds it on two sides.
