How to use color and material to unify an increasing amount of junk in the contemporary office landscape? An office interior for three companies is structured by a neutral background of white walls, white exposed ceilings, and a poured black floor. Everything connected to the floor is black. Everything connected to the ceiling is white. The three companies, while different and to a certain degree independent, are unified through this common material framework.
Even though the grand opening of the new interiors for the most valuable Czech IT company, the most trusted antivirus manufacturer in the world, took place at the end of 2015, all the works on the interiors for Avast Software company have been finished by studio VRTIŠKA • ŽÁK in the mid of a year 2016.
Located in New York’s Little Italy, Karma’s office was transformed by design studio FormNation into a modern space that combines Dutch and American design influences and provides transparency, communication and work-life balances for the employees.
Karma’s design brief was short, but clear: Design a space with 40 desks, ample break out areas, a war room, communal lunch space for 40, that fits the brand, and they had to move in there in 4 weeks.
How should we design a place facing the remains of Alcudia’s historical walls? What action to take opposite to the historical fortifications in there since times of Jaume II? A reinterpretation of the walled citadel and the site´s symbolism gave us the key to solve the proposal.

Ordinary things contain the deepest mysteries… If anything is described by an architectural plan, it is the nature of human relationships, since the elements whose trace it records – walls, doors, windows and stairs – are employed first to divide and then selectively to re-unite inhabited space.
Robin Evans’ 1978 essay Figures, Doors and Passages analyzes how ordinary elements of a plan and their arrangements interact and shape occupancy. A simple corner or window opening is in fact inscribed with a complex matrix of spatial relationships that determine how a space is used. Neri&Hu’s design for Bloomberg Hong Kong’s internal office stair is in part inspired by the mundane elements of space-making – windows, passages, staircases and thresholds. The client’s brief was to design a staircase to connect the 3 different floors of their office with the explicit rule that this stair should to be used daily as the only vertical connection within the office to encourage employee interaction. Part of the brief was to also create a design that would respond to the locale of Hong Kong to create a link to the larger context of the city. The site is situated in the client’s existing office, within a typical office tower and surrounded by existing conference rooms, break-out areas, a recording studio and an auditorium. The existing spiral staircase was sculpturally iconic but the geometry was not conducive for the daily high traffic volume. Our challenge was re-design a staircase that would work within the structural limitations of the knock-out panels in the floor slab, while still creating a more spacious journey.

The building is located in the historic district Žvėrynas, the former summer resort and recently part of an old town of Vilnius. Rich with old wooden houses and natural vegetation it is considered one of the most preserved historic small scale homesteads of the city. This is what has become the main challenge – to face the strict architectural and urban protection requirements, by the same time to create a contemporary, memorable, open and inviting object for the public use.

The renovation project of the FTI foundation’s headquarters in the heart of Geneva’s industrial urban fabric was undertaken following two primary objectives:
On one hand, the need to activate a collaborative culture amongst the different departments, based on a transversal project dynamic, and on the other hand the need to propose a renewed and coherent client experience in line with the foundation’s values. The users were involved in a participatory co-design process from the start, helping to shape a common vision and to create an optimal user experience.
Located in the old Royal Bank space on St-Jacques street in Old Montreal, the Crew offices is a project defined by a 12,000 office area for a tech start-up which would also include a café for freelance workers as well as for the public. The project presented two distinct design challenges: The first design challenge originated from the client’s requirements- how to elaborate an architectural relationship and construct boundaries between the various program functions. The second challenge became a deeper questioning on how to approach design in the context of a heritage building.
