Tucson Mountain Lava House in Pima County, Arizona by Paul Weiner | DesignBuild Collaborative

The Tucson Mountain Lava House is situated within the eastern alluvial flow of the Tucson Mountains, a terrain that falls gently toward the Santa Cruz River. Defined by a wide drainage to the south, the landscape is richly populated by low-lying bedrock outcroppings, saguaro and barrel cacti, palo verde, ocotillo, jojoba, and creosote.

Gastronomic LAB – A series of chambers infused by a varying gastronomical experiences – display of produce, court to enjoy, and laboratory. The later one composed of a hot and cold sections complemented by the cold pressed juice section. Smells, colors, taste and nature will intervene to create one single space that can be fragmented into self sufficient parts but at the same time work as a whole. A laboratory that studies, preserves and maintains the natural active ingredients, minerals, flavors and aromas in food.

Renovating a former school as community centre in Woesten, Belgium by atelier tom vanhee

The building is accessible by a central binding public domain, the playground of the former school (built in the 19th century). By opening some windows further down we reinforce the relationship between interior spaces and this square. By doing the same at the other site of the building, the back area is activated as a green semi-public space linked with the meeting hall. The closed functions, the storeroom, the technical areas and the sanitary facilities are grouped in a partially extended volume. It is a rejuvenation of the building, where the recent sanitair extension gave rise to.

Alkhozama Desert House in Riyadh Desert, Saudi Arabia by Ark-Kassam Architects

Ark-Kassam Architects have created a contemporary residence design concept which is to be allocated on a knoll in the middle of a private Oasis palm, Al-Riyadh Desert.

Three Masses are forming the design of the house and defining the entry lobby with the Arcade courtyard and the interior garden. These volumes are the Service Mass, Living Mass with sunset view and Night Mass with sunrise view. All masses were organized in order to provide the needed shade for one another, creating the different atmospheric scales in between the indoor and the outdoor space protecting the house from extreme weather conditions.

Competition for Mo I Rana Waterfront (1st place) in Norway by arkitektgruppen cubus

Mo i Rana has always had a primarily functional relationship to the fjord, which has been one of two major transport systems serving the local industries of iron- and concrete production, the other being the railway. The town is located far inland and the fjord has always served as a main connection with the rest of the world. The railway has served as the other main pulse connecting the town to the east and south, in addition to the two main roads E6 and E12. The railway track runs straight through the centre of the town and acts as a physical barrier between the town proper and the fjord, only surmounted by bridges or underground tunnels. This prevents the establishment of a physical and programmatic continuity linking the two.

Overview Overlooking the scenic Accabonac Creek, our challenge was to renovate and add a pavilion to a recently built residence. In dialogue with the client, a program was developed to extend the residence to include a new indoor spa and art studio and to add a new Pool Pavilion facing the serene waterfront.

Prospect Park Apartment Renovation in Brookyln, NY by Utopus studio

Overview: Located directly across from the Brooklyn Museum in Prospect Heights, this 2750 sq. ft. pre-war apartment commands breathtaking views of Lower Manhattan and Prospect Park. However, over the last 30 years the apartment was subdivided in smaller rooms resulting in clustering the circulation and obstructing the views.

To mitigate the high density of accommodations required on the site, the design adopts a strategy of a tri-parte form and discontinuous stepped silhouette.  These formal ideas are complimented by the unique polychrome façade that merges the large building with the surrounding landscape.

SkatePark in Lemvig, Denmark by EFFEKT

By introducing the ‘Skate+Park’ concept, EFFEKT has created a new type of multi-functional and recreational urban park area that bridges user groups of diverse interests and age.

In the spring of 2013, Lemvig Municipality faced a group of citizens eager to transform an empty industrial lot on the city’s harbour front into an area of leisure and recreation. In order to meet the demands of the local population, EFFEKT worked closely with representatives from different user groups to develop a new type of urban space. The result of this collaboration was an integrated skatepark + urban park that offered a range of programmatic features and recreational opportunities. Set in beautiful surroundings, the park has created a new social space in Lemvig, attracting skaters and families from the entire region.

Designed in response to Hurricane Sandy relief efforts in New York, Resilient House creates a dwelling that is both sustainable and resilient in the broadest sense. Socially, it is low cost. Culturally, it accommodates a contemporary lifestyle and aesthetic. Ecologically, it uses minimal resources to build and to operate. This is accomplished through simple, sensitive, and creative design.
