Located in the very heart of kharkov’s busy downtown, ave plaza inevitably became a new commercial hub of the city, attracting visitors with a variety of shops and restaurants, as well as with its striking appearance. the new building fills a gap in the historic tissue along the red line of the street, providing smooth transition between two existing scales. although the building has a relatively small footprint, it proves to be highly efficient due to well thought-out circulation, which provides access to numerous facilities on each of the four commercial floors. in order to achieve maximum efficiency of the retail centre, the volume of the building is pierced by an ellipsoid atrium with a peninsular tower in the middle. the tower is occupied by a variety of restaurants, encouraging visitors to climb higher to the upper floors. the tower inside the atrium creates a lively atmosphere, without spoiling the sightlines and the entire visual perception of the interior space. occupying one fourth of the total area, the atrium represents an allusion to a city quarter. it is topped by a roof garden on the level of the fourth floor.

MVRDV have designed Paradise City, a 9,800m2 entertainment plaza which sits within a larger tourist hub just 10 minutes from Incheon Airport in Seoul. Two buildings shape a retail complex and a nightclub within fluid, yet monolithic, forms. Each of the buildings takes its profile from its surrounding family, becoming a concrete casting of the facades that look onto them. The square, marked by a giant golden spot, becomes a beacon to those flying into the city. The project is being undertaken in partnership with Gansam Architects who also designed the wider masterplan of the complex. Construction is envisaged to begin in September 2016 and to be completed by 2018.

The site is located at Daebang-dong, where U.S. army base ‘Camp Grey’ had been located for 55 years until the retrocession in 2007. Located adjacent to this site was Seoul Women Shelter which accommodated prostitutes, runaway dementia elders, and vagrants from 1962 to 1998. The shelter was converted to Seoul Women Plaza. This is a symbolic place where tragic division of the Korean peninsula, poverty and hardships of woman in the era is accumulated and conveys the agony of Korean modern history. The purpose of this project to turn this gloomy and ‘deathlike’ space into a place of resurrection, a site of nurturing space that will foster welfare of women and families.
