Rio Olympic Port in Brazil by JDS Architects

Wednesday, July 6th, 2011

Article source: JDS Architects

When looking at the creation of any new neighbourhood we need to identify qualities and clarify what its identity and attractiveness will be both for the city and for its inhabitants. For Porto Olympico we want to bring a new life to the area by creating a development which is turned inside out. Rather than making a simple series of towers with all the life on the interior, we have made a project which is defined by a thousand parks, balconies, and plateau’s of life and vitality.

Cinema Pushkinsky in Moscow, Russia by Popular Architecture

DuPont’s 2011 Changing the Face Competition
Popular Architecture: Shortlisted

Derived from Casey Mack’s Description

Welcome to Pushkin Square, where Cinema Pushkinsky sits. In 1961, when it was completed, it shone out proudly, and attracted hordes of visitors. But now, in the 21st century, it has drawn in on itself. Historic photos and sketches of this theater show a building that was once much more open and inviting. It was a theater that drew moviegoers into its luminescent darkness. Now, the dilapidated movie theater appears to be a dead end of the once radiant Pushkin Square.

Gouveia, door for entry to the Serra da Estrela, is going to be served by new Law Courts.

The land set aside for construction is located between the public gardens, at the end of the Rampa do Monte do Calvário, replacing an existing building. The project takes advantage of the demolition of the existing building, which occupied the whole of the plot, to design a new Plaza, with a scale and dignity to receive the Law Courts.

Sunday, June 12th, 2011

Article source: Zellnerplus Architect

This is a competition entry for a major public space in Cairo, Egypt. It is intended as a catalyst and model for the ongoing redevelopment of Greater Cairo. The Ataba and Opera Square areas combined with the Azbakiyya Gardens collectively form a 100,000+ square meter urban figure that sits at the threshold between the old, medieval city of the Fatimid Caliphs and the modern Cairene city founded by Khedive Ismail in the 19th century. This was the setting for the competition, which called for an urban plan, infrastructureimprovements, landscape architecture, garden design as well as large scale architectural solutions.

Rakvere Linnametsa residential area spatial planning in Estonia by Peter Sand

Friday, June 10th, 2011

Article source: Peter Sand

The approach of this proposal has been to develop a residential area with a strong connection to the context. By being located on the very edge, where the city and the forest merge together, there has been given an unique opportunity to make an area in the city and in the forest at the same time with the advances it is giving.

Gran Casino Costa Brava in Lloret de Mar, Spain by b720 Fermín Vázquez Arquitectos

Wednesday, June 1st, 2011

Article source: b720 Fermín Vázquez Arquitectos

The Gran Casino Costa Brava, located in the historic gardens of the Gran Hotel Monterrey in the centre of Lloret de Mar (Girona), is based on a distinctive environmental and architectural project by b720 Arquitectos, headed by Fermín Vázquez. At once practical and singular, the design of the new casino breaks with convention by approaching the complex as a unified structure that rises out of the ground. The building is divided into three clearly differentiated levels that are integrated in the surrounding environment.

A fragmented orchard in Kirchberg, Luxemburg by OKRA

Tuesday, May 10th, 2011

Description of the project:

OKRA won the competition to design a public space between office buildings in the Gruenewald area of the Luxemburg city borough of Kirchberg. OKRA thought of how to give the fragmented neighbourhood a consistent identity of its own. As the area lacked a clear programme, OKRA chose to come up with their personal programme for an ‘urban orchard’. By planting apple and pear trees, OKRA has attempted to create cohesion between the scattered spaces and buildings. Thus the theme of the ‘edible city’ gives this public space its coherence. The urban orchard consists of many little orchards, each with its own atmosphere – but everywhere passers-by are invited to pick the fruit.
