Tua Valley Interpretive Centre in Carrazeda de Ansiães, Portugal by Rosmaninho+Azevedo – ArquitectosFriday, February 8th, 2019Article source: Rosmaninho+Azevedo – Arquitectos In 1880, the opening of the Douro railway line provided an alternative to waterway transport. Travellers, but more particularly Port wines and the products necessary to produce them, benefitted from the two hundred kilometres of rail tracks connecting the Spanish border and the city of Porto. Between 1988 and 1990, the last 28 kilometres of this railway and several sections of tributary lines (including Tua), considered insufficiently lucrative, were closed. In 2008, operation of the Tua line ceased entirely. The construction of a dam on the Tua River, approved the following year and requiring 16 kilometres of railway tracks to be flooded, made any re-use of the service definitively impossible. Rehabilitation of The Old Railway Station of Burgos in Spain by Contell-Martínez ArquitectosTuesday, December 4th, 2018Article source: Contell-Martínez Arquitectos The construction of the railway network and the travelers station by the Company of “Northern Railroads”, at the beginning of the Twentieth century, was a significant event for the city of Burgos due to the relevance of the equipment and the significance for the city planning, importance that, however, was lost with the passage of the years till its total abandonment. The project aims to rehabilitate the Old Railway Station to accommodate a recreational and leisure programme intended primarily for children and youth. The intervention extends, on one side, over the Station Square (former Travelers Courtyard) as a pedestrian and relationship space and, on the other side, a boulevard that is today where the railways used to be. Lorient-Bretagne Sud Railway Station in France by AREPThursday, October 25th, 2018Article source: AREP The extension of the high-speed rail line to Brittany will soon allow a three-hour total travel time between Lorient and Paris. The new high-speed line along with a more frequent regional rail service (TER) and the introduction of bus rapid transit systems will enhance the network, thus increasing passenger flows throughout the station, which is expected to handle 2.5 million passengers throughout 2017 (compared to 1.5 million until recently). Alongside the increase in ridership, the surrounding neighbourhood has undergone a thorough transformation, which led to the reconfiguration of the site layout. The formerly abandoned rail land has been redeveloped in order to host a new urban project and brand-new public spaces. The new station has been designed to form a link between the various districts and to integrate into the local context more successfully while providing enhanced accessibility the transport network. The international railway station in Akhalkalaki is part of the construction of the new Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway, that connects Azerbaijan and Turkey through Georgia, effectively improving the wider economic relations between Europe and Asia. As a break of gauge is required in Akhalkalaki, as the first stop on Georgian side after the Turkish border, the station as well as the city will become a place of exchange beyond connectivity for all three countries. Ourense Intermodal Station in Spain by Foster + PartnersFriday, July 14th, 2017Article source: Foster + Partners Designs for the refurbishment and extension of the Ourense FFCC Station in Galicia, Spain, by Foster + Partners and Juan Cabanelas have been unveiled. The integrated design brings together high-speed rail and bus stations in a major urban intervention, which will open pedestrian links between the districts on either side of the tracks, and create a vibrant new public plaza for the city. Capitalising on the practice’s extensive experience in designing spaces for travel combined with pivotal urban interventions, the project represents a unique opportunity for Ourense.
