ELASTICOSPA wins an Award at Archmarathon in Miami with the Maison Glacé project

There must be a difference in designing a home in Toronto as opposed to Turin: two very culturally different cities, different also in size and morphology.

Stefano Pujatti, founder of studio ELASTICOSPA must have asked himself this question often, when he decided to open the second headquarters of his studio in the Canadian metropolis.

Backyard House in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam by AD+studio

Tuesday, November 21st, 2017

Article source: AD+studio

“Nhà phố” – a kind of architectural feature of Ho Chi Minh city has been built rapidly in bulk in the correspondence with the city’s development and the society’s need.

In addition to the intended use, some of the townhouses are being used as a business base; they come out in a rush and are operated almost the same based on the constructors and investors’ using habit and living environment. It has led to the result that there is little change in the building’s plan: the atrium and stair are arranged in the middle of the house, dividing the house into two separate parts. This arrangement since then has created many problems in terms of ventilation and lighting as well as the privacy of the surrounding living spaces but there is still no reasonable solution.

Creueta House in Barcelona, Spain by Zest Architecture

Tuesday, November 21st, 2017

Article source: Zest Architecture

This house was designed in the 1950s by a local artist for his family. In those days a leafy suburb with single family dwellings, the area has now become an integral part of the city. The new owners, who fell for the possibility of city-living in a fairly quiet neighbourhood with unbeatable views towards the Mediterranean, hired ZEST to take on the task of doing a complete overhaul to make this house ready for family living in the 21st century.

Raonjae in Cheongju, Korea by Kim Dong Hee

Monday, November 20th, 2017

Article source: Kim Dong Hee

“Raon” means “happy” in Korean. The site is located in a small village Chungwon. The town is between ridges of a mountain and a main attraction is the distinctive change of seasons with the leaves changing colors each season. In order to contain all the scenery surrounding the site, this house (Raonjae) is projected in four directions. Even though this house faces in four directions, it doesn’t have an excessive number of windows. This reflects the owner’s idea of privacy that there should be a hidden place to stay alone. At the porch along a white outer wall, there are white walls and stairs crossing the walls. There is a quiet room for the mother’s frequent guests after passing the porch. Facing the stairs, there is a deep kitchen on the left side, a bright living room on the right side, and a long deck is planned, which is a special feature of the house. Going up the stairs from the living room, there are two rooms for two sons and a small rooftop, and going up further, there is a bedroom and a bathroom for the married couple, and another rooftop. In order to satisfy the needs of the three generations in a single house, the space for one generation was clearly on the half-floor and the spaces do not interruptive each other, but are connected and have ambiguous relationships.

Selected as one of the “historical and cultural villages” in Fujian Province, Shangping Village has been sustained by its agricultural tradition and Hakka culture. In Shangping, most of the villagers have the surname of Yang, who are the descendants of Captain Yang Zhen from Han Dynasty. Shangping Village has a complete rural feng shui pattern where two streams run around the village and gather at Shuikou area (the water gap, village entrance). There are many provincial-level cultural heritages such as the Tai Fu Tai Mansion, the Yang’s Ancestral Temple, Shezumiao Shrine, Zhaogongmiao Temple, etc. According to the legend, the great scholar Zhu Xi used to give lectures in Shangping and to leave with treasured calligraphy. Therefore, Shangping has a reputation for “literary village surrounded by water “.

Sears Department Store in Memphis, Tennessee by DIALOG

Sunday, November 19th, 2017

Article source: v2com

In the heart of Memphis, Tennessee is the awakened community of Crosstown. The genesis of this urban revival dates back to 1927, where a premier Sears retail store animated the community. At its height, this art-deco building housed 1,500 employees. Over time, shifting demographics and population depletion in Memphis’s urban core led to the store’s closure. As time passed, the 1.5 million sq ft building fell into disrepair. Some thought the building and community unsalvageable. Those some thought wrong. This is a story of the regeneration of an entire community-lost through strategic Urban Design by International Design firm, DIALOG.

ENGEL House in Andělská Hora, Czech Republic by Vit Maslo and David Richard Chisholm

Sunday, November 19th, 2017

Article source: Vit Maslo and David Richard Chisholm

In a small community in the Western region of the Czech Republic, not far from the spa town of Karlovy Vary, this villa was designed as a recreational house for an accomplished man, his family and friends.  The architect’s intention was essentially to assimilate the romantic context of this small village, posited just under the massive cliffs and ruins of a Gothic castle, where the town originated. Andelska Hora (originally in German Engelsburg), belongs to a protected area of the country, and sits above 600 meters in altitude.  The local climate, as one could expect, has dramatic extremes.

House By The Brahmaputra in Guwahati, India by STUDIO ADAPL

Sunday, November 19th, 2017

Article source: STUDIO ADAPL

The location of site with its magnificent views of the Udaigiri hills & the mighty Brahamaputra river has played a major role in the designing of this house. The site is contoured, with the top most level perched upto the height of 7m from the approach road level. This height facilitated an unobstructed view of the river on the NW & the hills on the SE side. The land cutting for the ramp, servant’s quarter & the party hall has been used to fill the steep slope on the NW side resulting to a step terrace. This terrace is used by the lady of the house to enjoy her hobby of gardening. A cantilever deck juts out over this terrace. This deck is part of the outdoor space of the party hall that was carved out below the main house. The main bungalow is positioned on the flat portion of the topmost level of the contour.
