R-House in Vadodara, India by K.N.Associates

Saturday, May 27th, 2023

Article source: K.N.Associates

A three-level bungalow in Vadodara designed for a traditional Gujarati joint family

This home by K.N. Associates was built with exposed brick and RCC; the structure is contemporary, while being rooted to its site and context

Exterior

Exposed brick as well as RCC come together in this home, with pergolas visible on open terraces. An open courtyard is nestled within the C-shaped footprint of the structure. Semi-open spaces abound, acting as buffers between the living areas and the garden, to be enjoyed in conducive weather. Wooden columns, arches and brackets salvaged from old structures have been used strategically, on an occasional porch or a balcony, to create a jharokha. The extravagant detail in their carvings contrast with the straight lines of the architecture, which is without frills. But in this bold, unexpected gesture, the tones of the old wood and the terracotta of the brick come smoothly together without jarring. In India, such columns can be sourced from Gujarat, Rajasthan or even the south. We were careful to choose the ones from Gujarat, to root the home to its location.

Merricks House in Melbourne, VIC, Australia by Aktis Architects

Monday, May 22nd, 2023

Article source: Aktis Architects

The design of this project was a journey of discovery. The original concept was half submerged into the rise of the landscape. As the concept navigated all the challenging conditions of site / environment and budget, a contradictory strategy emerged. There seemed no reason to hide the building in the landscape. It was located in a rural setting, not in a natural forest. The building took on a monumental form of materiality and structure, anchored with unapologetic strength of presence into its landscape.

CASA BOMBAI in Buenos Aires, Argentina by TIM ARQUITECTOS

Monday, May 22nd, 2023

Article source: TIM ARQUITECTOS

Casa Bombai is a rationalist project where concrete plays a transcendental role: not only visually, but also as a way to execute sophisticated geometries that allow the house to be delimited and expanded in its surroundings. The cantilever partitions give rise to this dichotomy present throughout the entire façade.

Modern Elegance at Swati Crimson In Ahmedabad, India by Prashant Parmar Architect | Shayona Consultants

Friday, May 19th, 2023

Article source: Prashant Parmar Architect | Shayona Consultants

This 1,850 sq ft abode for a family of 3 in Ahmedabad features an open layout with well-ventilated spaces that are closely connected with nature, put together with a graceful coordination of pastel shades, which not only adds flavour to the design palette, but also creates an ambiance of de-emphasized opulence.

Aptly called the Suave Suite, this apartment is an effortless combination of luxury and simpicity having 3 Bedrooms along with Family Sitting, Dining, and Kitchen. It utilises muted design principles, imbuing them with a touch of nonchalant elegance to make a statement of luxury, sophistication and rootedness. Natural tones and a clever blend of warm and cool shades, sprinkled with pops of colour, make up the palette of the entire home. A particular emphasis was given to achieve a minimalist, airy, and colour-rich home.

South Hill House in Toronto, Canada by StudioAC | Studio for Architecture & Collaboration

Friday, May 19th, 2023

Article source: StudioAC | Studio for Architecture & Collaboration

Located north of downtown Toronto, South Hill house near Casa Loma is a renovation, restoration, and addition to an older brick home. A sensitivity to the existing structure was observed when altering both the interior and exterior while the new addition stands in contrast with contemporary details, larger open spaces, and modernist massing.

While siting of the project was influenced by local zoning regulations, the new mass also yields to the existing house along the north elevation to celebrate the different periods of construction. While the new addition also utilizes a brick chosen to match that of the existing house and pay homage to the greater Toronto vernacular there is no mistaking what is new vs. old. Across the façade of the existing house as built openings were respected and referenced when conceiving interior layouts. On the addition expansive panoramic openings were used to bring in light and expand the perspective across the leafy tree filled neighbourhood.

The context assumes a very important role for the design of the ‘Cotopaxi House’ since it is a great tool to be able to define the form and project it with nature without losing the identity of the place.

A modern and quiet house located outside the urban area, located in one of the mountainous areas and in turn the land is in a high mountain topography in Cotopaxi Ecuador. The residence has slopes and places of contemplation that are used to have a good view of the volcano and the whole place.

Picturesque house with a pond in Saint Petersburg, Russia by RYMAR.studio

Wednesday, May 17th, 2023

Article source: RYMAR.studio

The site is located in the Repino resort area of St. Petersburg. Two-storey house with a total area of 825 m2 is positioned on a picturesque lot of 0.2 hectares with a minimum slope. The architectural style is minimalistic, yet not ascetic. The concept is based on laconic forms, strict silhouette and clear zoning. The project was inspired by the work of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, a leading figure of modernist architect generation of the 20th century. At the heart of his “less is more” philosophy lies the clarity and comprehensibility of the design. Architectural simplicity is expressed in the ephemerality of the structure, free planning and homogeneity of façade materials.
