The Thumb House in Madison, Wisconsin by Lazor Office

Tuesday, August 30th, 2016

Article source: Lazor Office

It can be challenging enough to find the right frame for a painting. But what if you want to frame an ever-changing natural environment—and you also want to live inside the frame?

The spaces of the Thumb House actively engage the surrounding landscape. Where the warm wood façade of the house recedes within a zinc wrapper, a wide outdoor room opens toward the lake, framing a panoramic view of water and sky. White-stained wood lines the inside of the outdoor room, transitioning smoothly into the white interior of the house at a glass wall.

Double Roof House in Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan by Hirokazu Suemitsu + Yoko Suemitsu / SUEP

Create a cool space controlling sunlight like in a huge “SUDARE”  (a reed screen).

A one-story house is built on a large site in the middle of the residential area, surrounded by low hills. As the neighboring buildings are mostly low-rise houses, almost none of the shadows fall on the site, and in the result the site is always exposed to the sunlight during daytime. Therefore we thought to suspend a huge “SUDARE” on the site to create cool energy in its shadow and then locate four boxes that forming house at its bottom. The upper roof is made out of 75 mm by 75 mm thinned wood arranged in a checkerboard pattern.  The span between its ends is approx. 40 m. To allow such as extension we used a PC steel rod system such as in suspended bridge construction, hanged on the steel beam located on concrete pilaster. This “SUDARE” has a role to cut off sunlight that falls on the roof surface. In the gap between the four buildings under the huge “SUDARE” was created a comfortable, half outdoor space. With overlapping of the conical landscape made out of remaining soil and the scenery of slightly elevated hills,  the huge SUDARE formed into curved by its gravity creates  a beautiful appearance.

Lightwell House in London, United Kingdom by Emergent Design Studios

Tuesday, August 30th, 2016

Article source: Emergent Design Studios

This unusually long Victorian Lion House is situated at the bend of a long terrace in Fulham. Given the limited depth of the rear garden and narrow proportion, the main body of the building and its rear wing were carefully extended towards the side and into a large basement, in accordance with the historical constraints imposed by its heritage context. Extensive light wells topping the extensions are utilised to expose newly open, contempviews. An ample basement space is connected to the upper levels both visually and physically through light wells, glass floors and cantilevered staircases, thus opening spaces across levels and creating a flexible and welcoming family home environment.

House BB in Buenos Aires, Argentina by LUCIANOKRUK

Tuesday, August 30th, 2016

Article source: LUCIANOKRUK

The place

The ground of 20m x 30m located in the forest of Mar Azul has the particularity of a very important unevenness respect of the two streets it faces. While this complicates the resolution of access to the site provides the advantage that, if the house is located high, it is very little exposed to the gaze from the street, and also from the inside you can get views of the landscape above the neighboring buildings. This difference in level is more or less smooth to the back of the lot, but it is very sharp towards the opposite front and in this area the forest is also thinned.

A Bower House in Ontario, Canada by Kariouk Associates

Tuesday, August 30th, 2016

Article source: Kariouk Associates

Bowerbirds /ˈbaʊərbɜrd/ make up the bird family Ptilonorhynchidae. They are renowned for their unique courtship behavior, where males build an elaborate structure in an attempt to attract a mate.

Design Challenge:

The challenge was to design a new home with a view of Lake Erie for a client who did not want to pay the cost of a lakeside property.  Hence, the site he acquired was a very long and narrow lot across the road from other homes and 2,000 feet away from the shore of the lake.  Despite the client’s selection of a less desirable lot, the project was required to serve as a lure for a mate (a love nest as it were, perched in the treetop) complete with two bedrooms for two yet non-existent/future hatchlings.  As such, this love nest aimed to both woo and wow a mate while also demonstrating proper family planning and money-management skills.  The remaining challenge involved the limits set by municipal zoning bylaws that restricted the home’s height to a maximum of “two storeys”.

Vodniy Residential Street Block in Moscow, Russia by SPEECH architectural

Friday, August 26th, 2016

Article source: SPEECH architectural

This residential complex consists of five 26-storey buildings arranged in a checkerboard pattern on top of a multi-storey underground car park. This configuration of volumes of identical shape and height has made it possible to create a system of semi-enclosed inner courtyards between the blocks. The main entrances to the buildings face the courtyards and take the form of stately portals.

Two Family House in Savyon, Israel by Israelevitz Architects

Friday, August 26th, 2016

Article source: Israelevitz Architects

The connections system, between the exterior and the interior as well as the different areas of the house, was at the core of the plan designed by architects Hila and Danny Israelevitz for a house in Savyon, Israel. The result: a house to be discovered, which is not read at once but in stages, while creating a discovery experience, changing interests and sensations.

The owners of the house, which is located in Savyon, came to architects Hila and Dan Israelevitz with a reasonably standard program, with no wild whimsies – all they wanted was a modern house which is open to the outside, functional and convenient for everyday conduct, and suitable for their lifestyle as a family with three children. The chemistry was immediate, and so was the first sketch by architects Israelevitz, which was, actually, the only sketch. “The house owners’ wishes were in line with our concept that the house needs to first and foremost be used suitably for those living in it, and that was the purpose. To create a house which fills the needs of its inhabitants, and at the same time creates and highlights feelings beyond any aspect of time, fashion, or architecture alone”.
