Custom home in Westport CT by DeMotte Architects

Friday, August 12th, 2016

Article source: DeMotte Architects

This project started out as an addition/remodel to a really nice little cape…”we’d like to remove the roof and build a second story addition”. This kind of project usually leads to extensive remodeling of the first floor, at which point you’re very close to the cost of just building a new house. One I heard “we’d also like taller ceilings on the first floor”, that’s when the decision was made to tear down the house & build a new house in it’s place.

LEBENsuhr Zopfmatte residential complex in Switzerland by fsp Architekten AG

Thursday, August 11th, 2016

Article source: fsp Architekten AG

The Zopfmatte residential complex aims to help and encourage residents to live independently in their own homes, whilst meeting their needs in every stage of life. The Zopfmatte housing concept demonstrates a forward-looking understanding of living arrangements for the elderly. In Suhr, the political, social and individual independence sought by (very) elderly residents is construed as assisted independence. The necessary occupational and organisational structures have been consistently integrated into the project. An on-site contact team is available to residents on a daily basis. Interfaces to the community are in place. The contact team plays a key role in the Zopfmatte operating concept. It consists of a contact person and a caretaker with additional responsibilities. Together they take care of the service office for the complex. Their main task is to help residents achieve independence, to provide them with information and to offer organisational advice if necessary, for example in their dealings with authorities and official bodies. Administrative operations in Zopfmatte are financed by the tenants and apartment owners by means of a flat-rate solidarity fee. Based on these conditions, \”Ageing in Place\” is achieved.

White marble in Chojnow, Poland by Marmur Studio

Wednesday, August 10th, 2016

Article source: Marmur Studio

At first glance, the goal was clear. Modernize an existing kitchen cum dining room located on the ground floor of a single-family home. How appearances can be deceiving! In conversation with the owners, we discovered that half of the house was to later serve as an office. As the office side would face the garden, the original idea was to build a long corridor leading from the kitchen to the terrace door. Our proposal to switch the location of the kitchen and office at first surprised the owners but, after consideration, was found to offer an ideal solution – a functional arrangement separating work space from home life while concomitantly providing the kitchen with a beautiful garden view.

La Maison Haute in Québec, Canada by Atelier Pierre Thibault

Wednesday, August 10th, 2016

Article source: Atelier Pierre Thibault

La Maison Haute was designed to reinforce the relationship between the residents, their immediate surroundings and the view on Lac Clair. Located on a plateau, in the middle of a steep hill, circled by mature trees and a narrow river, the construction offers an atmosphere of protection within a vertiginous body. Despite being compact, the living spaces interact through double and triple heights and offer a breathtaking sight of the forest, from the bottom of the trunk to the leaves. The master bedroom acts as an overlook on the nearby lake, giving the impression of sleeping in a cozy cabin, lodged through the branches. Attached to the main volume by a thin entry porch, an exterior room lives by the rhythm of the seasons. Protected from changing weather, sit by the fireplace, residents can appreciate every day the sound of the water pouring, the clicking of leaves or the slow fall of snowflakes.
