Gallatin River Bank House in Big Sky, Montana by Prentiss + Balance + Wickline Architects

Saturday, November 26th, 2016

Article source: Prentiss + Balance + Wickline Architects

The River Bank House sits along the Gallatin River just outside Big Sky, Montana. The clients love to entertain, so the house was set up to create an open and casual atmosphere with a strong connection to the outdoors. The house is oriented toward the best view of the river while maintaining good solar orientation for taking advantage of solar heat gain in the winter and keeping out the hot summer sun. The large roof over the living room serves to shade large areas of glass in the summer, while geothermal heat pumps and high levels of insulation help keep it warm and energy efficient in the winter. In such an extreme climate the house was specifically designed to withstand both extremes of the temperature spectrum.

Terrace 9 in Nanterre, France by AZC – Atelier Zündel Cristea

Friday, November 25th, 2016

Article source: AZC – Atelier Zündel Cristea

The project is part of Seine-Arche development which concerns a wider territory in line with the axis of Defense. Taking into account the natural relief and coexistence of various networks which pass through, the Seine-Arche development required the upstream of colossal structures. Aiming to attract here new populations from all over the department of Hauts-de-Seine, the urban project was designed to restore the site scale and its habitability, through a series of seventeen \”Urban Terraces\”. The new buildings offer an architecture that is both monumental, in response to the scale of the site and which expresses the domestic nature of the programs. By his design, details and the choice of the materials, the project provides opportunities for the quality of living and the sustainability of the buildings. Even if the planned allocation for the Terrace 9 is divided into several programs, the whole ensures a single coherent expression. Our goal was to work accurately for functional quality and comfort of the housing program distributed between the three towers and the base. Accommodations are of varied types, ranging from studios to T5, in accession or in social housing. The facades are exposed respectively to the four cardinal points, they are all provided with numerous openings that extend the inside of housings to cascades of terraces, or to small hollowed loggias, which are interposed in the design of the frame.

Rural Tourism Houses in Molino Lucero, Spain by elisavalero arquitectura

Friday, November 25th, 2016

Article source: elisavalero arquitectura

The plot where this work is situated was formerly a horse patio for the farm called Molino Lucero, at a crossroads between the Guadalteba reservoir and the town of Teba in the province of Malaga. The irregular, trapezoidal shape of this 475-meter plot and its access to an existing road on the north side were important determinants of the project. We also took into account the fine views of La Estrella Castle to the northeast, and the mountain range to the north and northeast.

The project is inspired by vernacular constructions with white walls and vertical openings and the criteria for this intervention were rationality, straightforwardness and good functioning.

The Harmony between Architecture and Belongings across Time: A Former “Kenban” Turned Into a Home.

Kinosaki Onsen, located in Hyogo Prefecture, is one of the leading onsen areas in Japan, with a history of over 1300 years. Just a short path in from the main street of this onsen city is a small stream, along which stands a former “kenban” (a place for geisha performers from the onsen to gather). Built 50 years ago, and surrounded by a bamboo forest, we converted/renovated this building into a residence.

Article source: Atelier Didier Dalmas

Built on a ground with strong slope, the building takes advantage of the site by working on two levels.

Indeed, on a low level a garage and a studio take place. We can also find all the technical elements necessary for the efficiency of the house. The accesses to these spaces are completely hide since the outside, by dint of the rigor of the drawing. (Picture n°1 and 2)

Koumori-An 1945-2015 in Wakayama, Japan by Atsumasa Tamura design office

Value in Keeping

The 70-years old house was inherited from Owner’s aunt, who bought the original structure to teach Tea Ceremony. A new living quarter was added later to complete this wooden single-story building. It had been left as storage for years and was too damaged, yet Owner chose to keep the old characters, despite cost & time, than to build a new. Inspired by his wish, the renovation began not just to restore but rather to create a space where the old section merges into the new in a harmonious way. The “Koumori-An” house offers the concept of “Value in Keeping” which no new house can imitate.
