Article source: MIDE architetti

The project involved the renovation of an 80s’ apartment at the edge of the historical centre of Padua.

The interior space has been extensively re-conceived through essential design interventions and the employment of minimal materials. This was accomplished by retaining fragments of the original structure with the addition of contemporary elements.

Article source: Sobrado + Ugalde Arquitectos

The original California style house was located on a 2,625 sq m lot with 1,285 sq m constructed. After going over all the spaces we decided that for the intervention it was necessary to demolish the south area of the original construction, a large volume blocking all the light.

Article source: destilat ARCHITECTURE+DESIGN

The “Apartment E&E is not just your usual rehabilitation of a classic Viennese apartment in an old building but also a statement for sustainability in interior design.

The central theme was to unite the client’s quite strong stance on anti-consumerism with high aesthetic demands for a sound overall concept.

Walcot Square in England by FORM studio

Sunday, February 25th, 2018

Article source: FORM studio

Planning Consent has just been granted for this brownfield residential development in the Kennington Conservation area, providing six new houses for rent for historic local Lambeth charity the Walcot Foundation.

Malcolm Crayton, Director at FORMstudio, comments: “The approval for this well-mannered, low-density development, despite the considerable orchestrated opposition from its immediate neighbours, was ultimately a victory for common sense. Although it is widely recognised that the urgent need for new housing involves inevitable densification and the redevelopment of smaller brownfield sites such as this, the ‘not in my back yard’ factor can still be a major hurdle to overcome.”

Little House. Big City. in Brooklyn, New York by Office of Architecture

Sunday, February 25th, 2018

Article source: Office of Architecture

The owners of this 11-foot-wide row house in Brooklyn were faced with a conundrum that many young families in New York eventually confront: the possibility of sacrificing location for space. After living in the house for eight years, the pair – an architect and jewelry designer – chose to expand in order to make room for their two growing children and remain in the Brooklyn neighborhood they had come to admire. The original 2-story, 1000SF home was completely gutted and extended to 4 levels by adding a bedroom suite above and digging a new urban mudroom below. The narrowness of the house required the design to make effective yet frugal use of space; every inch was important. Precise positioning of walls, doors, and windows was crucial as each floor was planned to serve a purpose. The lowest level serves as a new entry, storage, laundry, and mechanical area; the first floor is a continuous public space with living, dining, kitchen, and library opening to gardens in the front and back; the second contains two kids’ bedrooms along with a 2-sink bathroom; while the topmost level holds the master suite with a sleeping area, bathroom, balcony, and terrace. A slender steel stair repositioned on the south side party wall connects the house vertically and draws more light, air, and views into the building. Materials throughout the home are modest, natural, and unassuming: the rawness of unfinished steel and character-grade walnut is juxtaposed with the simple refinement of honed Carrara marble and matte ceramic hex tiles. The result is a home that is not just larger, but livelier – filled with the possibility to do more and stay longer in a city that requires its residents to be resourceful.
