Wall House in Khaldiya, Kuwait by AGi architects

Wednesday, March 30th, 2016

Article source: AGi architects

As in the famous Lewis Carrol tale, Wall House is not what it seems. Is it a fortress that closes itself to the world? Or is it an isolated place that avoids all communication with the exterior? Not at all! Wall House by AGi architects communicates with its formalized solid skin, an existing concern in the city. It is the expression of those thoughts: “the all judging peeping tom”, “windows that looks towards the place where nobody wants to be watched”, “opened facades show only false and preconceived realities”.

House on Solitude Creek in St. Michaels, Maryland by Robert M. Gurney, FAIA, Architect

Friday, March 25th, 2016

Article source: Robert M. Gurney, FAIA, Architect

The design of this house in St. Michaels, Maryland was greatly influenced by environmental regulations, zoning requirements and restrictive building codes specific to this site. The existing Dutch Colonial Style house, built in 1989, was located within a One-Hundred Foot Buffer Zone on Solitude Creek, a small estuary in this Maryland Eastern Shore town. A recently adopted Floodplain Management Ordinance mandated that no new structures be built within the Buffer Zone, and that all renovated or altered existing structures be updated to meet new zoning, building and environmental code requirements.

Europan 13 Community, a sustainable building in Barcelona, Spain by Archilea architecture

Sunday, March 20th, 2016

Article source: Archilea architecture

The strategy: The project stems from the desire to decline the concept of sustainability, specific in this competition, in three distinct areas: environmental sustainability, social sustainability and economic sustainability. The stated goal is to create a system in which the three fields can interact and integrate in order to reach equilibrium without one of the three areas of the system, which normally happens, can take precedence over others. To create this system, one of the aspects taken into consideration was the ability to move away from the traditional housing system in which the threshold of building represents a limit insideoutside trying to include in the own building a whole series of activities that can aggregate functions and increase the opportunities to meet and socialize the inhabitants. The basic idea is that the internal layout of the building is transformed into a “public square” open to the outside integrating, as mentioned, functions traditionally handled from outside and defining the building, in fact, as an hybrid: this combination of features provides the possibility to the residents of the building to meet, socialize and discuss transforming the whole neighborhood in a community, overcoming the possible socio-economic and cultural-linguistic differences.

Day center and home for the elderly of Blancafort.

A social building necessary for the elderly of the village of Blancafort and its neighboring municipalities.

The initial observation of the plot and its environment led to consider that the future building did not have to solve only a program and a requirement of an isolated building, but it also had to help consolidate the nearest urban fabric, creating an entrance to the village with its own personality and public character.
