Article source: Patterson Associates

The ancient architype of The Castle as an Outpost or Fort is rarely articulated in the modern world. This New Zealand farmhouse project explores this typology by being both commanding and defensive in one form.

Woodpeckers in Hampshire, England by Strom Architects

Tuesday, November 22nd, 2016

Article source: Strom Architects

Woodpeckers is a private house in the New Forest, designed as a two-storey replacement for a 1930s bungalow. The site sits amongst fields and private woodland just outside the National Park, with a heavily-treed and well-established garden.

The clients wanted a comfortable contemporary home as a weekend house, which would eventually become their permanent home in the future. With busy lives in London, they needed somewhere that they could retreat to at weekends to relax and to entertain friends. As keen gardeners and enjoying the outdoor lifestyle in the forest, they wanted a strong relationship with the garden, as well as the surrounding countryside.

Hartrow in Winchester, England by Strom Architects

Tuesday, November 22nd, 2016

Article source: Strom Architects

Hartrow is a large-scale refurbishment and extension project to a 1960’s house in Winchester. The original house was unusual in its residential street setting, presenting an entirely different aesthetic, orientation and layout to its neighbours. Part of the challenge was to ensure that the works would celebrate its mid-century styling whilst bringing its function and performance up to twenty-first century standards.

Ilot de l’Octroi in Rennes, France by MVRDV

Saturday, November 19th, 2016

Article source: MVRDV

Rennes dates back to the 18th century and is organised around two main squares, the place de la Marie and the place du Parlement. In the centre, old and new coexist together with Gallo-Roman remains, Louis Arretche’s futuristic Le Mabilais, Georges Maillols’s Les Horizons and more recently, the residential Cap Mail by Jean Nouvel. This Métropole is among the most attractive areas to live in France and its diversity of heritage and growth led to a shift in emphasis from the centre to the city’s outer areas connected by the pedestrianised Mail François Mitterrand. This move from a rural to urban context has meant denser developments occurring at the edges, to prevent encroachment onto the countryside. The growth in population and industry has called for measures to cope with future change, most notably for more housing and efficient transport routes. MVRDV, ALL and Giboire respond to this need for more sustainable housing communities and will contribute to the expansion of the centre by breathing new life and refocusing communities along the rivers.
