Renovation Of 150 Housing Units – Le Foyer Bruxellois in Brussels, Belgium by Philippe SAMYN and PARTNERS

Sunday, September 18th, 2016

Article source: Philippe SAMYN and PARTNERS

The 6 buildings in the Minimes neighbourhood were designed in 1954 by architects and urban planners from the Alpha group. The architectural composition of these social housing units is elegant and the buildings were erected with great care.

Still, time has left its mark. The thermal insulation needs improving, and it is also important to equip all units with decent sanitary facilities.

Special care has been taken to respect the great simplicity and harmony of the existing buildings.

Fahle House in Tallinn, Estonia by KOKO architects

Sunday, September 18th, 2016

Article source: KOKO architects

Fahle house, which was designed by KOKO, is one of the characteristic examples of architecture during the recent economic boom in Estonia. It is a building that from an architectural point of view was ambitious, from a real estate development point of view risky, and from the heritage protection point of view controversial and received a lot of attention from the public. Situated at one of the main entrances to Tallinn, between the airport and city centre, Fahle house draws the attention of every passer-by. The building is part of the complex of a former cellulose and paper factory where the most outstanding building is the tall and voluminous boiler house (1926) built from limestone and designed by architect Erich Jacoby.

Housing Borneo island in Amsterdam, The Netherlands by Marlies Rohmer Architects & Urbanists

Sunday, September 18th, 2016

Article source: Marlies Rohmer Architects & Urbanists

Urban design In the Eastern Harbor Area, next to the KNSM and Java island lie Borneo and Sporenburg islands. West 8 (Adriaan Geuze) has created a very inspiring urban plan. The question for West 8 was how to create a water-city along the kilometers of 19th century harbor cays. West 8 did not solve this problem by attempting to subdue the scale with huge blocks, such as Jo Coenen has done on the KNSM island, nor by trying to reduce the scale by creating cross-canals, such as Sjoerd Soeters, but by repetition of a small scale.

Sorrento House 1 in Victoria, Australia by Vibe Design Group

Sunday, September 18th, 2016

Article source: Vibe Design Group

Sorrento House 1, the latest coastal project from Vibe Design Group, is the Australian Beach house reborn. The building presents a modest, yet sinuous face to passers by. A well-honed palette of materials is introduced, their application modulated masterfully and subtly; the mark of an experienced hand. Timber battening twists to become shuttering for windows behind. A cast concrete wall articulates the point of entry. A low-slung, angular roof constructed from 18m sheets of custom Colorbond is punctuated by a cast concrete chimney; stylish protection from any seaward weather.

A large Berlin block of flats in Bötzow district, built in 1905, with a representative front building, side wing and rear wing was extensively refurbished in a partially inhabited state.

The originally rich stucco facade of the front building had mostly dropped off and the remaining elements were irredeemably dilapidated.

Central Park Residence in Cluj-Napoca, Romania by Dico si Tiganas architecture and engineering

Friday, September 16th, 2016

Article source: Dico si Tiganas architecture and engineering

When the client demanded three rectangular residential towers on a site with irregular contour, surrounded by a winding stream that derives from the Somes river and by clusters of poplar trees that surround the nearby sports park, we took the responsibility to come up with a different approach: a building that integrates the three separate units in one unitary volume with a layout that undulates on the site so that it makes the most of the natural light and views. It also provides a sheltered space and a private, quiet area, in the resulting concave space. This space is an artificial landscape, a green leisure and relaxation area that is shaped as a green roof for the underground parking.
