Formerly a parking lot on the southeast corner of Fulton and Gough streets, the Drs. Julian + Raye Richardson Affordable Apartments has risen on one of the sites freed for development by the demolition of the collapsed Central Freeway. This five-story building will provide permanent supportive housing for a very-low-income, formerly homeless population.
Maria Jose and Enrique live in Mexico but travel a lot in Europe. They wanted a second home in Asturias that could be an apartment for the couple and for the whole family at the same time. Through a rotating furniture the two bedrooms of the house may come and go in a minute. The house has three positions and a house with two bedrooms, one bedroom or none of them.
With an approximate 350m2 for the covered areas and another 200m2 for open spaces, like pool and solarium, this house is inserted in a wooded terrain with a private beach just a five minutes walk and the impressive scenery of Caribbean Sea.
Alibaug is a district located 3 hours from downtown Mumbai (50min by ferry/20 min by speed boat). Formerly an agricultural and fishing zone, its proximity to Mumbai has seen it slated for phased redevelopment to alleviate the congestion of the island city. The plot for the house is nearly at the top of a hill overlooking the Arabian Sea and the skyline of Mumbai to the west.
The X House project aims to solve by the definition of a system, language, or even through a unique form, a number of inquiries that rise up when we read the specific given site: how to protect and give protagonism to an impressive pine, that is located on the top of the site, and that makes access and approximation to the house extremely complex from the street; how to avoid deciding between the views to the sea and those to the mountains, and allow both visions in opposite directions; how to neutralize through form the presence of the contiguous constructions, to build up a fake isolation that denies the neighbours; how to double the main views, permitting quality frontal views from the front and the rear of the house; how to resolve so many a priories with a simple movement that answers to all of the previous aims without prioritizing nor explicitly formulating a response to any of them. The form, a unique form, is the result of a long process of search of individual answers to each of those challenges; thus, the form is not an a priori, but an effort to give a unitary response that satisfies each of the questions rose up in the design process.
The Bhandare Residence straddles and synthesizes a multiple set of matrices. The underlying design philosophy is Sanyam or Balance, which is translated into least impact on a relatively dense urban site. Visual continuity between the front and the rear gardens and the negation of built-up form at the ground level, allows the house to both embrace the form of the site, whilst ushering in natural light and ventilation.
Castelli owes its appearance to an interpretation of a recent urban regulation proposed for some “corridors streets” of this low-density area.
In a small corner lot of 11.60 x 16.50mts, the block complies with the mandatory street withdrawals and separates from inner limits lots, which give a certain height to take advantage of views of the Setúbal lagoon and the center of the city.
