Ar de Rio Bar Esplanade in Vila Nova de Gaia, Portugal by Menos é Mais Arquitectos Associados, lda

Tuesday, May 2nd, 2017

Article source: Menos é Mais Arquitectos Associados, lda

Architecture is not built without matter as it imposes a physuical limit.

The limits of this object reside in the precise definition of its structural ‘parti’ as much as in the desire of achieveing a limitless state.

The brief asked for a versatile space, protected from the seasonal changes of weather but open to the river breeze in warmer days.

The condition of its openings is such that the object becomes with ease a ‘covered’ esplanade.

Bodegas Real Winery in Valdepeñas, Spain by Paredes Pedrosa Arquitectos

Friday, April 28th, 2017

Article source: Paredes Pedrosa Arquitectos

The project is an extension of a 17th century farmhouse and wine cellar in the countryside of La Mancha, which creates a centre devoted to wine culture. A new star–shaped piece is placed in the ancient courtyard, connecting old buildings and new ones. Its large scale is fragmented into smaller open spaces, each of them linked to the new functions around it. The courtyard, centre of the activity of the old farmhouse, is transformed by this star–shaped construction but maintains its character as an exterior space. The peaks of the star open towards the landscape giving entrance to the new complex. In this way the complex acquires a new relationship with the surroundings.

Restaurant “Fiore di pietra” (stone flower) in Monte Generoso, Switzerland by Mario Botta Architetti

Friday, April 28th, 2017

Article source: Mario Botta Architetti

The new restaurant on the top of Monte Generoso graces the spot where an early twentiethcentury hotel once stood. The location is extraordinary: a small plateau overlooking the precipice on the north side of the mountain, characterised by a mighty rock with a steep 300- 400 metre drop. The impressive rock formation was the deciding factor for creating the “stone flower” – an octagonal building with individual “petals”. On the east front this circular crown provides the space for an observation deck that follows the ridge of the mountain.

Torre Bicentenario in Mexico City by OMA

Wednesday, April 12th, 2017

Article source: OMA

Compared with the world’s other economically ascendant regions such as Asia and the Middle East, Latin America has a skyscraper deficit. Poised to harness the economic and symbolic potential of the Bicentennial, Mexico City will celebrate a historic moment with the emergence of a new skyscraper, the Torre Bicentenario. In an architectural age defined by the pursuit of expression at all costs, the Torre Bicentenario is building whose unique form is responsive rather than frivolous; a building whose form facilitates rather than complicates its use: the stacking of two pyramidal forms produces a building simultaneously familiar and unexpected, historic yet visionary.
