Climate-responsiveness in architecture is typically conceived as a technical function enabled by myriad mechanical and electronic sensing, actuating and regulating devices. In contrast to this superimposition of high-tech equipment on otherwise inert material, nature suggests a fundamentally different, no-tech strategy: In various biological systems the responsive capacity is quite literally ingrained in the material itself.

Brooklyn Bridge Park awarded the development and re-design of the historic Empire Stores to Midtown Equities, a leading real estate investment and development firm led by Brooklyn native and Chairman Joe Cayre and his two sons Jack and Michael. Midtown Equities selected STUDIO V Architecture, led by Jay Valgora, to create the architectural design for the adaptive re-use and addition to seven Civil War era buildings.

The Lantern Festival is the last of the series of spring festivals that celebrate the Chinese New Year (Feb. 9 ~24, 2013). During this time, people come together to offer good wishes and pray for more blessings in the coming year.
In this spirit, the main lantern for this year’s Taiwan Lantern Festival, is aptly themed the “Ring of Celestial Bliss”. Its concept, based on the Chinese saying of “Blessings as high as the sky”, is vividly conveyed in all aspects of the design.

Smith|Allen participated in the Project 387 Residency, located in Mendocino Country from August 4-18, 2013. In the heart of a 150-acre redwood forest, Smith|Allen has created a site responsive, 3D printed architectural installation (the largest of it’s kind): Echoviren. The project merges architecture, art and technology to explore the dialectic between man, machine and nature. The Project 387 open house and reception was Saturday, August 17.

STUDIO V Architecture’s design for the Stamford Transportation Center and surrounding area was chosen the preferred scheme in a $500 million redevelopment competition put forth by the Connecticut Department of Transportation. Stamford’s station has grown to become the second largest in the region after Grand Central Terminal, rendering its current disjointed infrastructure and surrounding architecture obsolete. STUDIO V teamed with developer Stamford Manhattan Development Ventures (SMDV) to transform this traffic-congested station into a dramatic new 24-hour community that reconnects Downtown Stamford to the South End and the city’s waterfront.

The design of the house developed in direct response to the site and its location within the beautiful village of Yalding in Kent. The building’s structure is composed to reflect the surrounding woodland with the raking columns representing the irregular angles of tree trunks and branches. Large expanses of glass fill the gaps between the structure and allow you to appreciate the landscape and setting as if you were peering out from between the trunks and branches of the trees.

MoNo designed the art work “White Forest” which was exhibited in Ehrisman house , one of old western-style houses authorized as a historical architectures by Yokohama city government, as a formal program of The Festival Harmony of Flower and Table in Yamate of Yokohama-city JAPAN. This event has been held every June for 13 years by the cooperation of 7 city-owned historical Western style houses in this area. In this event, 7 artist-teams exhibit their own art world, under the theme of view of fresh-flower design and table decoration, treating the interior space of designated one among 7 old houses. We MoNo won the competition for this festival and was designated as the artist for one historical house Ehrisman house . So this art work was created as our latest one in our career of contemporary art for historical spaces.

In line with its new policies on pre-college education, Republic of Turkey’s Ministry of Education is planning to build 33 new campuses on various locations all around the country, with a capacity of approximately 12.000 students each. The plan is to combine a number of longstanding educational facilities in inner-cities that either expended their lifespan or don’t have the room for further expansion, and move them to designated sites on the periphery of the related towns.
