Fredrikstad Waldorf School’s newest addition, which will accommodate children from grades 2 – 4 and create a new premises for the school day care facility, was recently opened by Jon-Ivar Nygård, Mayor of Fredrikstad. Located on a picturesque south facing slope and surrounded by trees the new building, clad in Kebony, is situated on the boundary between the forest and schoolyard. To preserve the natural backdrop to the play area, the building is partly placed on stilts floating above the creek to maintain the natural rock formations on the site and the flow of the little stream through the grounds.

In Banne Buiksloot in the north of Amsterdam the general building fabric consists of high apartment blocks. In contrast the public buildings do the opposite. They form a network of low buildings that seek a strong connection to the public domain. The new 2 storey primary school, designed by the architect Gianni Cito of the Amsterdam office Moke Architecten, does the same. The school stands out due to its crenelated shed roof and the tribune stairway that connects the school with the playground. The playful round windows and the red scaly façade give the building an autonomous expression that fits its public role.

Two years ago, in February 2014, Orkidstudio broke ground on a new girls’ school in Kenema, in the eastern region of the country, employing as many as seventy men and women from the local community each day. The Swawou Foundation sought to provide extensive new learning facilities for up to 120 young girls from the local area. First set up in 2009 by Ahmed Jaward and Kirsty Wood, it was the only school around that didn’t allow corporal punishment, and is producing young girls with confidence and intelligence unparalleled elsewhere. The building was voted the ‘best school in Sierra Leone’ on a national radio station before it even had a roof on.

The 6,300-sf Stevens Library at Sacred Heart Schools in is the first library in the USA and the first school building in California to achieve the International Living Future Institute’s Net Zero Energy Building Certification. It was part of the PG&E ZNE Pilot Project which also found it consumed less energy than it generated and is on track for LEED® Platinum and Petal Certifications.
The site is designed to maximize passive solar orientation, daylight and natural ventilation. 1. Solar harvesting through solar panels – the photovoltaic system provides all the library’s needed energy; 2. High-performance glazing and added rigid insulation for reduced energy loads; 3. Native, drought-tolerant plants are watered using harvested rainwater, Image Courtesy © WRNS Studio
