OLD SCHOOL REFURBISHMENT in Tréverien, France by Guinée*Potin Architectes

Friday, May 19th, 2017

Article source: Guinée*Potin Architectes

The primary school of Treverien is in the center of the little town, in an old granit building. This typical building of the region is unfortunately far too small with the expansion of the town. Thus, an annexe was built against the original building and two prefabricated buildings were set into the playground to gain more room.

Schoolgarden “De Buitenkans” in Roosendaal, The Netherlands by RO&AD Architecten

Sunday, May 14th, 2017

Article source: RO&AD Architecten

A neighbourhood family had a redundant piece of land, and offered that to “Het Da Vinci College” , a school for animal care and gardening, with pupils who require additional support. They didn’t know where this would end, because there was a plot, lots of enthusiasm, involvement, from the school, neighbourhood and city council, but neither the skills, nor the money to realise the project. That’s where RO&AD architects stepped in. With help of the Province of Noord-Brabant, Visavis Landscape designers, who gave a small budget, they designed a plan which made it possible to be made by the teachers, the pupils, and the neighbourhood themselves. It is a 6 meters wide and 100 meters long timber structure, with relatively easy to make trusses, which are held together by nail plates. All rooms, like the classroom, animal room, greenhouses etc are placed in a row, without any room and money devouring things like halls or hallways. When Rini, a teacher at the school, saw this, he became so enthusiastic, that he offered to make the building himself. And that is what happened. He postponed his retirement for 2 years, and together with neighbours, students and lots of other people he started to work. Under the guidance of a contractor and the architects, he built the school, and the garden in 1 ½ year’s time. And it works! Neighbours are taking down their fences to get access to the school garden. They take care of the plants and the animals during the holidays, and the students finally have a place where they can be proud of to work on.

Sunday, April 30th, 2017

Article source: NOZ Arquitectura

The project consisted in the refurbishment of the existing school building and extension with the construction of a new adjacent building to accommodate the new program.

The new building was designed with a remarkably modern language without however overlapping with the existing architecture.  The ground level of the extension building houses a classroom, teacher’s room,  sanitary facilities and kitchen. The upper floor has three of the new rooms, all with a direct exit to the exterior.

Casa de Magalhães Nursery School in Ponte de Lima , Portugal by Carvalho Araújo

Friday, April 21st, 2017

Article source: Carvalho Araújo

The ‘Casa de Magalhães Nursery School’ is located near the ‘Casa de Magalhães Home for the Elderly’, sharing some functionalities like public access, parking and a few services. The nursery school building arises from a volume displacement that is subtracted from the home for the elderly base building, allowing the creation of a courtyard and, at the same time, the new building for the children. Although both buildings take different languages, they share the same DNA, the same “skin”, which results in some common principles like privacy, security, intimacy and comfort. The initial volumetry of the set brings us to the cyclic process of life itself, as a metaphor of the aging process; from small to big, from simple to complex.

Óscar Romerocollege in Dendermonde, Belgium by De Jong Gortemaker Algra Architects

Thursday, April 20th, 2017

Article source: De Jong Gortemaker Algra Architects

The south side of the Óscar Romerocollege borders on the historical inner city of Dendermonde. The patchwork sequence of courtyards and streets is typical of this location. Two college buildings have already been built. A further two buildings – a tuition building and a sports complex – will be added and are intended to strengthen the school’s identity. We have extended this objective to include a connection to the historic centre. A connection that has been created by blending into the structure of the public spaces. The existing courtyards have been extended to include two new courtyards and a promenade. The four school buildings, each of which has its own individual appearance, create a powerful rhythm on the north side. This is where the main entrance is located. A covered path connects the existing and new buildings and takes the students past the different courtyards, each of which has its own function and identity.

Article source: Stefano Boeri Architetti

After a construction period of only 30 days, the new school refectory for Amatrice has been realized, thanks to the fundraising organized by Corriere della Sera and TgLa7 with the initiative “Un aiuto subito”. The school refectory, designed by Stefano Boeri Architetti, has been conceived as a multifunctional space for Amatrice’s children and it will become a gathering point for the local community, where people can meet, play and, maybe, stop for a while and look at the Sibillini Mountains, framed by the wide window in the main hall.

Article source: diederendirrix

In the design of the new Zalmplaat School, the expressive and soft building volume is equipped with two floors with rounded corners, creating an all-round soft shape. Colourful letters and strips in combination with wavy movements of the frontage make a characteristic and expressive building; a school with a familiar yet personal and distinctive expression, recognisable for the children, teachers and neighbourhood.

Giacomo Zanella Primary School in Villafranca (VR), Italy by GDA officina di architettura

Sunday, April 16th, 2017

Article source: GDA officina di architettura

The project area is located in the outskirts of Villafranca and Verona, between the urban core and the agricultural land.

The more distinctive presence is  the “strada della Rizza” around which is structured the small village Rizza,  that’s  a quite busy output axis of Verona.

The new building is designed as a reconstruction and expansion of a previously existing one  lying parallel to the “strada della Rizza”  and looks like an inhabited wall that protects the school from the nearby road. For this reason, it present a 3,5m high basement in concrete without any window that look like an infrastructure’s construction.
