The design for the extension of the Alliés de Chavannes nursery school draws on its context within the landscape and its integration within the site. The three new volumes that house the extension connect to the longitudinal circulation of the existing building in such a way as to allow them to be perceived as separate pavilions. The existing building is reconfigured to become the school’s spine. Distinguished by two types of metal cladding – galvanized steel and anthracite zinc – the new volumes provide a visible distinction between the original building and its extension. The new volumes are organized to ensure fluidity and a programmatic organization in harmony with the existing functioning of the school, logically inserted between the trees and providing views of the surrounding vegetation. Elevated on steel stilts and with facade openings offering each space a variety of orientations, the extensions allow pupils to imagine that their school is a tree house!

For the new Aarhus School we propose a pedagogical toolbox inspired by the industrial history of the site, an ever- changing urban catalyst offering flexibility and opens towards the city and the future.
The project is placed close to the Katapult theatre and the Godsbanens cultural centre to create a vivid cultural platform.

The project started as a result of research work and a study completed in the community of Santa Elena. This was accomplished through reunions, interview, and participatory workshops within the population. The data collected revealed dreams and expectations in favor of education of their children. For this reason, the community expressed the willingness to rebuild its future, overcome the past, starting from the construction of a school. Education is a quintessential instrument for collective growth and development of a community.

Neushoorn (Rhinoceros) in Leeuwarden is a popular music venue and a school, all in one building. In collaboration with 3TO, DP6 architecture studio has designed a building that can take a bit of rough treatment while stimulating creativity. A dynamic building that fits into its urban context and delivers its function as a music venue and school.

The Oblates of Mary Immaculate founded St. Augustine School over one hundred years ago, at which time the school shared quarters with St. Augustine Church in a domed, three-storey, brick building located in the Kitsilano neighbourhood of Vancouver. In 1951, the original school was demolished and replaced with what was to be a temporary, single-storey, wood-frame building. Sixty-four years later, a new three-storey, 300 student, 4,200 square metre, red brick-clad school and child care facility that features fifteen classrooms, a learning commons, multipurpose spaces and allowance for a new gymnasium occupies the compact site.

The objective was the redevelopment and extension of an existing school – a building made from prefabricated concrete slabs in the 1970s – in the centre of Linz. The building’s extension closed a gap of surrounding perimeter block development while at the same time creating an independent ensemble. Easy access to public transport and the location within a dynamically developing urban area justify the expansion of the school site.

The project concerns the recovery of an Ex-Furnace in Riccione, an industrial complex for producing bricks, built in 1908 and decommissioned in 1970. The whole intervention area is 40.000 mq; the covered surface is 3.400mq. Old destinations give way to the new ones, exploiting the existing spatial possibilities, maintaining the shapes of the old body factory as historical memory of the place: inside of it will be placed a secondary school for 450 students, a theatre with 650 seats, a headquarters office, as well as the organization of the external spaces. The project aims to reduce the environmental impact, replacing the old buildings with new ones characterized by high energy efficiency, without filling more surfaces. The intervention is imprinted on one side to recover and give value the existing masonry elements, on the other side to distinguish the new elements from the old ones, maintaining a compositional coherence throughout the intervention. Outside the brise soleil in brick elements determine the homogeneous backdrop of the original architectural forms, using a traditional material in an innovative way: they give unity to the whole composition and at the same time they underline the existing brickwork. The two buildings of the school centre, whose technical aspects are cuttingedge, easily conform with the ruins of a former brick furnace.

Sasle School, located in the mountains and buffer zone of the Miraflores Nature Reserve in Jinotega, Nicaragua, serves as the only education facility for this rural community of 1600 people. Since opening four years ago, the three classrooms connected by translucent vestibules have seen a steep increase in school enrollment. They currently host 190 primary school students each weekday and 80 secondary school students during the weekend.

The School Bouldering and Climbing Centre in Bruneck is probably the first climbing centre in the world to be designed specifically as a school sport facility. Throughout the day, school groups will come here for physical education; the centre is big enough to be used by several groups at the same time.
