Renovating a former school as community centre in Woesten, Belgium by atelier tom vanhee

The building is accessible by a central binding public domain, the playground of the former school (built in the 19th century). By opening some windows further down we reinforce the relationship between interior spaces and this square. By doing the same at the other site of the building, the back area is activated as a green semi-public space linked with the meeting hall. The closed functions, the storeroom, the technical areas and the sanitary facilities are grouped in a partially extended volume. It is a rejuvenation of the building, where the recent sanitair extension gave rise to.

The Monique-Corriveau Library, housed in the Saint-Denys-du-Plateau church, is an exception, and in a rather unusual way. It is a tribute to the career—exceptional for her time—of the Quebec writer whose name it honours. This mother of 10 children, to each of whom she dedicated a book, was the author of numerous children’s books and winner of several literary awards.

Small spaciousness

The house in the woods is a residence for a couple and their guests. Despite the very limited area available for construction and the users’ requirements regarding the number of beds and rooms, a residence with a perceptible spaciousness arose. Starting from the ‘bungalow’ stereotype, the design sets openness against seclusion, introduces smooth transitions in contrast to set boundaries, emphasizes the correlation of surface and volume and, in this way, overlays the familiar with the new.

RS1 – 002 Kennedy Residence in Vancouver, Canada by Campos Leckie Studio

The project was conceived as a modernist prototype for Vancouver’s ubiquitous RS-1 zoning district. The project explored the development restrictions of the residential regulations as well as the limitations of building within an urban context. The process was meant to generate a set of guidelines for what we have termed a ‘flexible prototype’ that could address the contextual differences of individual sites in a way that allows for a customized integration of passive environmental strategies, the incorporation of exterior space as part of everyday living, and the provision of an affordable and flexible live work space.

The program consists of the execution of an area that distinguished public uses and  private uses. The building has different access for different uses, that  improving performance. On the one hand we find the area for personal, and second, the general public and workers, so that both paths are independent not exist any eye contact between the two, except for the showroom of the dead.

South Lowell Apartments in DENVER, COLORADO by Workshop 8 Architecture

The S. Lowell Apartments owned by the Denver Housing Authority (DHA) was an aging family site that had reached its useful life span. It had leaking pipes causing mold, structural damage and inefficient heat for both the units and domestic hot water. As with any prudent developer, the goal was to use the site for its highest and best use at the most affordable cost. Working together, WORKSHOP8 and Pinkard Construction helped the DHA find a way to obtain 96 units using the existing units and adding 28 additional units, saving them $5M over the estimated cost of tearing the existing structure down and rebuilding 96 new units, the maximum allowed based on City parking requirements.

Tang House in Carlton, Melbourne, Australia by 4site architecture

The client of this single fronted double brick terrace house in Carlton wanted to find an intelligent architectural response that would breath life into a dark and pokey dwelling.

The existing property is typical of Victorian terrace houses with a hallway and front two rooms configuration, then a poorly planned series of gloomy, dysfunctional lean-to additions, poor access to natural light and no direct connection to the rear yard. We responded to the client’s brief by retaining the original two bedrooms at the front, with a proposed double storey addition including bathroom, laundry, living, kitchen, dining area and an additional bedroom with en suite.

Woodlands Community Garden Shed in Vancouver, Canada by BRENDAN CALLANDER

This garden shed was designed and constructed in partnership between UBC architecture students and the Woodlands Community Garden Club. This structure is the focal point of the garden.

It acts as a gathering spot for local education programs and provides a practical storage solution. The unique form of the shed was designed to prevent shadows from being cast on surrounding garden plots while at the same time shading the central meeting space.
