Akbarally’s Men in Mumbai, India by DCA Architects

Wednesday, August 10th, 2016

Article source: DCA Architects

Originating in Mumbai in 1897 as the first departmental store in India, Akbarallys flaunts the antiquity of its rich legacy that derives from its existence of over 118 years. Conversing with the historicity of the city, today the 10,000 square feet ‘Akbarallys Men’ is a multi-branded departmental store for men. With a shop-in-shop format, the store reinvents its original, over a 100-year old concept of ‘everything under one roof’- but ‘this time for men’. The store houses an extensive collection of clothing and other necessities for men from all premium Indian and international brands along with its own range of bespoke clothing. Maintaining its antique character that was bequest over its structure in the prime, significant ‘Fort’ area in Mumbai, the brief was to transform the old site into its contemporary avatar, while retaining the celebrated inheritance.

Dawan Square Department Store in Beijing, China by LATITUDE

Saturday, June 18th, 2016

Article source: LATITUDE

Despite being a fairly recent construction, the actual department store has two basic flaws: a lack of character in its façade and public spaces –which we consider indispensable to ensure the success of a commercial building–, and a disorienting organization of the interior commercial area. Thus, the refurbishment scope of the building is focused on three main areas: interior refurbishment, façade renovation, and the restructuration of the outdoor landscape.

AMORE Sulwhasoo Flagship Store in Seoul, Korea by neri&hu design and research office

Thursday, June 9th, 2016

Article source: neri&hu design and research office

The literal and mythological meaning of the lantern is highly significant throughout Asian history—it leads you through the dark, showing you the way and indicating the beginning and end of a journey. Neri&Hu’s radical transformation of an existing five storey building in Seoul, South Korea, into a grand flagship store for leading Asian skincare brand Sulwhasoo is inspired by these notions of the lantern. The building was designed by Korean architect IROJE and built in 2003. Celebrating the roots of the brand, Neri&Hu wanted to develop a concept with strong connections to Asian culture and traditions, ultimately allowing customers to discover the wealth of Asian wisdom that underpins the Sulwhasoo ethos.
