Stones is a 25,450 square foot gambling hall, restaurant, and bar – in essence a boutique casino. The building is an expansion and total renovation of a former Salvation Army warehouse that had been vacant for years, and is the first project of this kind to combine and relocate two existing card room licenses under one roof. Citrus Heights is a small city sixteen miles east of Sacramento – within California’s Central Valley.
From Ghent’s ring road the first sight of the hospital AZ Sint-Lucas one gets is the multi-storey car park. For this reason the design devotes a lot of attention to the atmosphere and appearance of the site. The project zone is split into two parts, with the high capacity car park distributed over two buildings. This creation of two smaller buildings is effective within the spatial context and the granular size of the hospital campus, and creates a visual axis leading to the hospital.
A club’s private parking lot (Serendipity Club) becomes the perfect opportunity to design a summer terrace, thus valorising and promoting once again a suburban area of the town of Foligno.
For the campus of the Community Education in Ninove a master plan was first of all put together. This master plan would develop a total vision, split in three stages. The first stage includes building a primary school, a secondary school and a laboratory. The area covered by the project is part of the northern basin of the lake Massacciuccoli; until the 40s of the twentieth century the area was occupied by the cultivation of rice, then replaced in the late ’60s by the Lotus’ Flowers – today one of the largest camp in Europe. The site was in a state of decay and neglected and the public use was denied. Today with the new pedestrian and cycling path it brings to the light a true “environmental jewel” that opens a new scenario in an area unfortunately largely deteriorated by urbanization strongly pervasive and of poor quality. The Cycling & pedestrian track “Lotus Flower”, in its length of 1km, connects the train station of Bozzano to the centre of Massarosa and it is an integral part of the system of the regional cycling routes dedicated to Giacomo Puccini and places related to his life.
The site is located in an urban residential low density area surrounded by natural green areas near the sea. A large part of this sector is composed of plots with significant slopes.
The observation of the site and immediate surroundings and distant highlighted that most of the houses that were built or being built in the area followed the same premise: place it in the top of plot – filling the land where the buildings are located, through the widest possible cross-volume, leaving the rest of the site as a garden with difficult use and difficult relationship with the living spaces. Resulting in a disproportionately large number of houses, that are not integrated with the environment.
The aim of this restoration project was to preserve the architectonical complex of the Glass Church of Nostra Signora della Misericordia (Our Lady of Mercy) in Baranzate, retaining the original appearance of the building while updating it and adapting it to today’s requirements and the needs of the local community.
The apartment is designed as a dynamic space, which takes different connotations through sliding walls that separate the ritual places of living, such as the kitchen and the bedroomThe space acquires a liquid dimension, where the visual cones overlap and stratifyThe different levels of the floor creates a hierarchy between the living and the sleeping areasThe furnishings are all individually designed and develop the idea of tailored space that avoids the general understanding of iconic design brands, connoting the apartment with a strong character and personality. The project pursues pleasure for details, which is expressed in the accurate design of all the elements that are part of it, from lighting to the flat number on the entrance door. The lamps are all custom made and express a personal research around this piece of furniture which can take on a spiritual and sensual character. The viewer must look closely at the work to discover the intimate details, in order to grasp the subtle and evanescent aspects. Pleasure for details, for dimensions, for the authentic and for the light, is the themes the project has faced.
