Palm Springs Animal Care Facility by Swatt | Miers Architects

Sunday, June 10th, 2012

Article source: Swatt | Miers Architects

The Palm Springs Animal Care Facility represents a unique public/private partnership between the City and Friends of the Shelter.  Located on a 3 acre site across from the City’s Demuth Park, the exterior design reflects Palm Springs’ unique mid-century architectural heritage.  While creating an Animal/People Community Center ambiance the facility features a central indoor/outdoor kennel design with public adoption access within an inviting garden courtyard equipped with misters and fabric shade structures.  Also included are indoor cat community rooms, special canine “living rooms” adjacent to an indoor/outdoor socialization area, a training room for educational and community evening uses, and a fully equipped clinic for in-house medical procedures.  The project has been designed as an equivalent “silver” LEED facility with a special emphasis on water conservation, wherein recycled water from the adjacent sewage treatment plant is used for cleaning all animal areas and for landscape irrigation.

Article source: Luis Aldrete Arquitectos

The proposal is the result of a process that is based on three variables which together articulate and give the narrative to ideas. The first responses how to adapt the piece to the land being consistent with their morphology to achieve better orientation, privacy and views in greater depth of field.

The second has to do with the idea orientations to analyze the context that we find in the background, it means, the distant views of the mountains where we find the similar lines between the mountains and rooftops.

Spruce Art Center in Zhejiang, China by LYCS Architecture

Saturday, June 9th, 2012

Article source: LYCS Architecture

Located in Hangzhou, Zhejiang, China, the site is flush with mature spruce trees and a pre-existing one-storey abandoned structure. The design is a mixture of two fundamental challenges in architecture: to evoke new spatial meaning while reconciling an existing structure, and to produce a formal language that can be dynamic and strong, yet carefully caress spruce trees. The Spruce Art Center design is inspired by traditional architectural aesthetics from the southern region of the Yangtze, known as the most desirable place to live in China. The architecture of this region is known to exude an intimate connection to water and to high-profile cultural institutions and people.

Buchter Retreat in Orcas Island, Washington by David Coleman Architecture

Friday, June 8th, 2012

Article source: David Coleman Architecture

Program: A 2000 square foot vacation retreat located on a 15 acre wooded site littered with  glacial ledge in Washington’s San Juan islands to accommodate two sisters and their spouses.
Design: Our clients had long envisioned developing a cluster of buildings on the site, carefully  sited to preserve the rugged, natural landscape. In keeping with this vision, we endeavored to  create a modern rendition of the “summer camp,” complete with sleeping pavilions, a great room  and covered porches, all inspired by the platform tents and national park lodges of the late 19th  century.
