Based in Cartagena, Valparaiso Chile, the project is located in a subdivision area, small plots and home built by their owners. The exact site is a parcel of land of approximately 10 x 20 meters, with a gradient of approximately 15% that runs along the lots from east to west.
The design process for The Lantern Hotel project started in 2012 with long periods of time to get the building facade approval from the authorities, getting the client to confirm room numbers and room layout, going over and over the design, looking at different options and doing continuously cost-cutting exercises to maximize cost and profit for the client, achieving 49 guest rooms, all with attached bathroom, 2 dorms with each 6 beds and external bathroom, facilities for breakfast, centralized computer area, locker area and an outdoor terrace for a total project cost of only 4.2mil including furnishing.
This project explores the different possibilities and repercussions of developing a new space, which in this case is an architectural device that not only takes care of a need – a workshop for an architecture student – but also modifies the image of a space with little architectural interest: the roof of a service-bedroom.
Tepian Tunku residence is situated in an old-established, low-density residential area called Bukit Tunku in central Kuala Lumpur, surrounded by vast landscape.
The site of 26,000 sq ft is situated along a dead-end road, sloping downwards with wild overgrown planting ending close to an existing stream outside their lot with a gross build up area of ~10,000sq ft.
The house has been designed as a big white box in which, diverse vertical cuts has been applied forming a general view of texture. The white box sits over a concrete exposed structure, that helps hide the windows of the different rooms of the basement.
The main intention of this house renovation project was to create a central and predominant garden area (nonexistent due to the original placement of the house), and at the same time highlight and enhance the position of the house facing the hill, which was originally ignored.
DROO Projects is a Paris/London based studio specializing in high end residential design. This boutique apartment building tucked in behind a narrow listed Shop House building, in Melbourne’s inner suburb of Hawthorn. The long narrow Shop house building typology allowed for the existing building to be extended to create a two compact mini towers to the rear separated by a generous courtyard internally, providing light and outdoor living spaces for the individual apartments. The building is characterized by its large glazed windows, and the strong faceted gold fins, which provide sun-shading and privacy between flats.
The house has been built on a similar foundation base. The floor plan is the same and the central staircase is located at the same part of the building. However, the solution of the inner layout of the house is different.
