Curtain Apartments in Wolli Creek, Australia by Tony Owen Partners

Wednesday, September 24th, 2014

Article source: Tony Owen Partners

The new Curtain Apartment building by Tony Owen Partners Has just been approved at Wolli Creek near Sydney Airport. The 200 apartment building is located at the waterfront and has panoramic water views of Sydney’s skyline. The Curtain also fronts onto a large park and Botany Bay. The design is unique in that all apartments face north to the view. This ensures all units have wide frontages and all rooms have balconies to take advantage of the site. In addition, almost all are ‘thru-units’ running north to south. This is achieved using open rear access corridors on the south which are accessed from external, lift towers. As a result all of the units are naturally ventilated. This minimizes energy costs making this a highly sustainable design.

Paul Bert Léon Blum Boa Canteen in Lille-Lomme, France by D’HOUNDT+BAJART Architects & Associates

Wednesday, September 24th, 2014

Article source: D’HOUNDT+BAJART Architects & Associates

A unifying and fun building:

The urban challenge was to create a frame edge structuring this corner plot whose boundaries are based on low hosted terraced buildings, at the Marx Dormoy and Léon Blum streets. At the corner, the school restaurant’s parapet ascends gently, creating a bow that hides the restaurant’s technical equipment (centralair handlingand heat pump) while freeing the ground floor. The architectural treatment is contextual in its urban form and its materiality; the use of the brick, which dominates the landscape, has received a contemporary and qualitative review showcasing the polychrome emblematic brick bondingof the regional architecture .The layout of the masonry, with an almost random pattern, evokes the snake skin and activates the imaginary potential, architecture and young children dream-like: in a world where you have to respect the rules of the urban game, the building delivers a message of imagination, and seems, with its “snake skin” and “scale-like windows” to have the power to move.

Article source: SPLITTERWERK

The Graz-based design collective SPLITTERWERK was commissioned to design this headquarters building for PRISMA Engineering, a machine and motor technology company also located in Graz. The objective was to design a structure which could house the company’s various research and development programs, and selectively showcase the work to a varied range of often competing clientele. Thus the building design needed to accommodate both high-end testing and presentation without jeopardizing the security and secrecy with which the work is developed.

Windows, doors, and above all the floor tiles, had finishes and materials survived to another century: something precious to save as a resource for the new inhabitants of this space.
