A contempory home incorporates the charming but time-worn house, and capitalises on the stunning views on offer.

The original house on this waterfront site was a double-skin brick bungalow with warren-like rooms and little connection with the foreshore. The clients liked the traditional detailing of the existing house but wanted to maximise the aspect and views.

Colegio Villa El Sol in El Bosque, Chile by GUBBINS ARQUITECTOS

The project is located on a site with a special feature; it is 25 meters wide and 100 meters deep, which allows us to develop a 4-storey building occupying almost the entire ground surface. This gives the project a protagonist scale in the neighborhood.

The strategy to not “keep” the dimensions of the property (pre-existing length and width), was to organize the program of the school within a large regular volume, based on a double bay corridor, alternating classrooms and playgrounds in different levels and on both sides of the central circulation. This allowed us to open cross perspectives on the site, with views of the mountains and the sunset.

This classic modern house is designed around a number of mature trees, in a park-like setting. The house is designed as a collection of blocks linked by a flat-roofed element, housing the entry and gallery. The gallery space leads you past an interior courtyard and pool and on to the main living area, where a strong connection to the garden is maintained via large glass sliders on both sides.

Chesapeake Building 12 in Oklahoma by Elliott + Associates Architects

This building is located next to a creek that bisects the campus. This building is curved and all glass to differentiate it from the brick office buildings and to make clear that this is a public building like the other two all glass buildings on campus (the Conservatory Restaurant and the Fitness Center Addition).

Program Requirements: 

  • Add a second auditorium on campus that seats 232.
  • Add a third on campus restaurant that seats 138 inside and 48 outside.
  • Provide a banquet room for special events which seats 144.
  • Provide a boardroom for quarterly board meetings.
  • Provide private dining rooms that seat 8-12 people for lunch meetings.
  • Provide a 2,843 square foot catering kitchen to provide food for meetings all over campus.

Monterrey, the third largest city in Mexico, is best known for its beautiful mountains and strong industrial backbone. In the heart of the city is Fundidora Park, a unique specimen of industrial archaeology (it was previously a massive steelworks and foundry established in 1900). The park is home to extensive gardens, museums, convention centers, auditoriums, theme parks and cultural venues such as Conarte (Council for the Culture and Arts of Nuevo León).

The Boathouse in Haddal

The start of summer 2012 was very different for 21 architecture students from NTNU. Instead of going home on vacation, they travelled to a small village in Sunnmøre. Here they were to realize their first building, a unique boathouse situated between the fjord, the mountains and the sea. The project was organized and designed by six of the students, all in their 2nd year, at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. It all began back in January, when the students travelled to Haddal to get to know the site and the client.
