The chapel of rest in Graz, Austria by Hofrichter-Ritter Architects

The chapel of rest for the Steinfeld cemetery is designed in the form of two curving formwork elements made of reinforced concrete and appearing as two carefully receptive hands. It is the centrepiece of the redesigned Cemetery Centre which was begun by the municipal parish of Graz under episcopal vicar Dr Heinrich Schnuderl, continued by Christian Leibnitz, the new municipal parish provost, and finally built to a design by Hofrichter-Ritter Architects in 2011.

General Manifold in Chelsea, Michigan by Spatial Ops

This installation was the centerpiece of a collective exhibition organized by the architectural collaborative Spatial Ops and students from their Meta Friche research seminar at Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning.

Located in central China, Zhengzhou is experiencing rapid re-development.  Part of a broad scale master plan labeled “The Rise of Central China”; Zhengzhou is implementing a two part initiative:  ecological and infrastructural development.  Ecological development prioritizes the surrounding natural resources; forest park, scenic areas, wetlands/reserves, rivers/lakes & urban green space.  Infrastructural development addresses an emerging market identified as “Logistics Industry”.  Zhengzhou is to serve as an integrated hub for the import/export of goods and mass transportation which connects the east and the west.

Idea of MVTP(Metropolitan Vertical Theme Park) started with raising 2 questions:

01. Do we still need to keep the century-old prototype of (subway-located) theme parks?

Suburb-located theme parks have been by-product of automobile-centered society. Indescribably horrible traffic congestion and huge hard-scaped (Hot asphalt) parking lots and has become a constant problem in the towns where these theme parks have located. Theme parks such as Six Flags attracted all kinds of undesirable sprawl to suburbs. In the contemporary society where zero-car, zero carbon is highly valued, these theme parks have been located at the opposite side of eco-sensitive society.

Re-Imagining Seward Park Redevelopment (SPURA) on the Lower East Side, New York

Recent news coverage for the 7-acre parcel, Manhattan’s biggest undeveloped,  publicly owned development site south of 96th Street, has provided the chance to contemplate many important urban issues.

Firstly, are we taking full advantage of this great opportunity to develop a vast land in the heart of Manhattan, or just limiting our imagination under current NYC zoning resolution (which is 50 years old)? Secondly, is the hot debate over big box retailers heading to the right direction?

Acadia Parish Conference Center in Crowley, Louisiana by Trahan Architects

Located to the north-east of Crowley, the site lies between the urban/residential development to the west and the rural/agricultural development to the east. The design seeks to mediate this threshold and express the importance of the local agricultural development to place. Rice is the primary economy in the Parish and city of Crowley. Rice fields create a beautiful mosaic that blanket the landscape. Contours follow the natural topography, control water run-off and delineate rice paddies. As technology has advanced the rice fields have evolved from a more fluid configuration to a more orthogonal configuration. This results in a more efficient layout and maximizes the yield.

The architecture of the new  Distribution Centre of “Farmacias Ahumada·  looks for solutions  for the distribution and handling of pharmaceutical products, incorporating the latest operational technologies and Bioclimate

It is a simple, categorical and simple architecture in harmony with the natural environment. The building is located in the periphery of the city of Santiago, in a new  urban area  in development.

Miami Pier Museum in Miami, Florida by OSO Studio LTD

At the extension of the axis of the fifth avenue, pier museum becomes the ending of the urban space above the sea. The typology of building expresses the conversion and interaction of spatial energy. Simulating the natural growth, along the view toward the seascape in distance, the structure stretch from the beach end to the sea, converts the city space formed by street to a floating seascape terrace, planar pier evolutes to an organic structure, and provides the free path of promenade above the sea level.
