Integral House in Toronto, Canada by Shim-Sutcliffe Architects

The Integral House creates a place for architecture, music, and performance located at the threshold between Toronto’s urban fabric and its extensive natural ravine system. In the project’s program brief, our client clearly articulated his dual passion for mathematics and music and his interest in curvilinear shapes resulting in spatially complex volumes.

  • Software used: The design was developed though hand drafting and physical model building techniques.  The working drawings for construction were further developed using AutoCAD, along with some additional hand drafting.    Some of the custom hardware pieces – such as the  door handles and glass clips for the blue glass stair were developed using Rhinoceros NURBS modeling. The design process was iterative – typically it would start with a hand sketch, or a physical model, which would then be further developed using AutoCAD, and / or Rhino, depending on the item.

The SALT research center was envisioned as a public tool and a vehicle to research, exchange, engage, and create content. The uniqueness of the historic building and the spatial volume of the Avlu was something to behold and therefore our design approach pursued both in a dialogue. Underpinning the material and formal choices of the design is the building’s eclecticism style of the late 19th Century, the other designer’s approaches to create the building’s contemporary character, and to co-locate with the Beyoglu building. ‘Socially engaging’ to the diversity of potential users and visitors was the spatial organization brief given in by the user group.

ICD | ITKE Research Pavilion 2011 in Stuttgart, Germany

In summer 2011 the Institute for Computational Design (ICD) and the Institute of Building Structures and Structural Design (ITKE), together with students at the University of Stuttgart have realized a temporary, bionic research pavilion made of wood at the intersection of teaching and research. The project explores the architectural transfer of biological principles of the sea urchin’s plate skeleton morphology by means of novel computer-based design and simulation methods, along with computer-controlled manufacturing methods for its building implementation. A particular innovation consists in the possibility of effectively extending the recognized bionic principles and related performance to a range of different geometries through computational processes, which is demonstrated by the fact that the complex morphology of the pavilion could be built exclusively with extremely thin sheets of plywood (6.5 mm).

Air China Blue Sky Tower in Chengdu by KSP Juergen Engel Architekten

KSP Jürgen Engel Architekten International has won the international competition entitled “Blue Sky Building Project” for the Air China headquarters in the major west Chinese city Chengdu. With its design for the high-rise, the international team from Frankfurt/Main and Beijing headed by Johannes Reinsch, Managing Director of KSP Jürgen Engel Architekten International GmbH, saw off five other entries. The office boasts a gross surface area (GSA) of 124,000 m² and offers space for a total of 5,470 workspaces. The fact that the high-rise design should serve as a role model with regard to energy efficiency and sustainability is of major concern to the developer.

The Appenzeller Memorial Hall of Paichai University is located in the most significant spot in the campus by facing to the main entrance. It represents the university along with the International Hall and Arts Hall which are known as the example of educational buildings. Many foreign universities have their churches at the center of the campus and now Paichai University became one of them by having their worship space within the campus.

Gyesan Church in Incheon, South Korea by iArc Architects (designed with Rhino and AutoCAD)

The site of the Gyesan Church, located in close proximity to an expressway interchange, is positioned at the center of the local transportation network. As the site extends along the expressway in a curved line, the positioning of the building was planned in accordance with the configuration of the site. In order to show the symbolism of a church, a tower was erected alongside the church, facing the expressway, and acting as a local landmark. In consideration for future expansion, the levels above ground were developed in a limited manner, while the educational and service facilities and a parking space were situated on the two basement levels. Above ground, a parking lot and an outdoor square are located, providing a place where buildings will be constructed in the future expansion. It is planned that during expansion, educational facilities will be relocated and the space will be changed into a parking space.
