LETH & GORI’s competition entry for a Pilgrim Centre in Røldal creates a new building in close connection with the 13th century church. The Pilgrim Centre is a hub for experiencing Røldal’s unique history, nature and architecture. The Centre accommodates for pilgrims as well as spaces for the priest and church administration. The project encompasses semi covered urban spaces for events and activities connected to the Church and Pilgrim Centre.

A new tower typology
The Taiwan Tower will become an innovative landmark people can identify with in present as well as in future times. Therefore the tower should not state a fixed message, but trigger people to invent their own interpretations of the tower’s meaning. To evoke multiply and diverse associations the tower has to be illusive and complex. It will become a dynamic and contemporary landmark that celebrates diversity.

Narud Stokke Wiig Architects & Planners, Haptic Architects and Griff Arkitektur have won the open international competition for the new airBaltic terminal at Riga International Airport.The competition called for “design concepts, both architectural and functional that best captured the aspirations and brand identity of airBaltic”. The first phase will accommodate 7-8 million passengers per annum, whilst the new terminal will eventually cater for 14 million passengers. The organising committee received 125 entries from 70 countries.

The extension of the primary and secondary school in San Piero a Sieve is located very close to the city of Florence.
The building consists of 630 square meters of new surfaces that will host the laboratories, the dean’s office, the offices for the scholastic staff, and an auditorium that works as an all-purpose space. Rooms and the gym will still be in the old buildings, built during the Sixties, and the new construction had also to connect to them.

The Oil Silo Home, designed by pinkcloud.dk in Berlin, recycles oil silos by transforming them into affordable houses. An oil silo is a storage container for compressed liquefied petroleum gas. There are approximately 49,000 oil silos in over 660 oil refineries worldwide! As the human population increases at an exponential rate, oil discovery decreases at an exponential rate. Soon all existing oil silos will be abandoned as fuel storage containers.

Located in Raleigh’s revitalizing Historic Depot District, an unlikely butterfly has emerged from its decades-long cocoon. The historic 1910 two-story brick structure built for Allen Forge & Welding Company and enlarged around 1927 for the Brogden Produce Company — and more recently home to longtime occupant Cal-Tone Paints — has emerged from its asbestos clad sheathing into a new incarnation as the home of Raleigh’s Contemporary Art Museum (CAM).

The Integral House creates a place for architecture, music, and performance located at the threshold between Toronto’s urban fabric and its extensive natural ravine system. In the project’s program brief, our client clearly articulated his dual passion for mathematics and music and his interest in curvilinear shapes resulting in spatially complex volumes.

- Software used: The design was developed though hand drafting and physical model building techniques. The working drawings for construction were further developed using AutoCAD, along with some additional hand drafting. Some of the custom hardware pieces – such as the door handles and glass clips for the blue glass stair were developed using Rhinoceros NURBS modeling. The design process was iterative – typically it would start with a hand sketch, or a physical model, which would then be further developed using AutoCAD, and / or Rhino, depending on the item.

The SALT research center was envisioned as a public tool and a vehicle to research, exchange, engage, and create content. The uniqueness of the historic building and the spatial volume of the Avlu was something to behold and therefore our design approach pursued both in a dialogue. Underpinning the material and formal choices of the design is the building’s eclecticism style of the late 19th Century, the other designer’s approaches to create the building’s contemporary character, and to co-locate with the Beyoglu building. ‘Socially engaging’ to the diversity of potential users and visitors was the spatial organization brief given in by the user group.

In summer 2011 the Institute for Computational Design (ICD) and the Institute of Building Structures and Structural Design (ITKE), together with students at the University of Stuttgart have realized a temporary, bionic research pavilion made of wood at the intersection of teaching and research. The project explores the architectural transfer of biological principles of the sea urchin’s plate skeleton morphology by means of novel computer-based design and simulation methods, along with computer-controlled manufacturing methods for its building implementation. A particular innovation consists in the possibility of effectively extending the recognized bionic principles and related performance to a range of different geometries through computational processes, which is demonstrated by the fact that the complex morphology of the pavilion could be built exclusively with extremely thin sheets of plywood (6.5 mm).
