PATCH22 in Amsterdam, Netherlands by FRANTZEN et al

Patch22, designed by FRANTZEN et al, was awarded the WAN 2016 residential award on January 10th 2017 and was also given a Green Award a day earlier. In December the project was runner-up to the Amsterdam Zuiderkerk award for the best housing project of 2016 while in November Patch22 was runner-up for the ARC2016 innovation awards.

#48 Zero Energy in Geel, Belgium by Skilpod + UAU Collectiv

The growing demand for and interest in new forms of living together inspired a Belgian entrepreneurial duo to develop the product Skilpod. A Skilpod is a mobile and modular housing construction that attaches great importance to its energetic properties but that is also always searching for progressive and diverse designs. By means of modular architecture Skilpod searches for a combination of flexibility and energy efficiency. The module is completely built and finished in the Skilpod-studio and subsequently transported and placed on the site. As a result the Skilpod is also moveable to a new location at a later time. The housing constructions are built out of a timber frame structure of CLT, Cross Laminated Timber, and fully isolated with a layer of rock wool insulation. In a Skilpod all techniques can be integrated that are used in a traditional house or office. Application of solar panels, heat pumps, ventilation systems, home automation systems etc. is possible, tailored to the user requirements.

Gordon’s Bay House in New South Wales, Australia by Madeleine Blanchfield Architects

This 6 bedroom home on the foreshore in Gordon’s Bay, Coogee was built for a young family.

It incorporates a north facing courtyard to bring light and air into the centre of the steep, east facing site.

The entry offers a vista from Gordon Avenue through the three storey stair void, across the 15m lap pool, and to the bay beyond.

“coniwa” is a cooperative housing residence, located in the suburbs of western Tokyo.

It consists of eleven dwellings arranged around a lush courtyard, which is covered by a wooden boardwalk. In this project the clients were initially provided with a constructive and architectural framework, in which the plan was designed according to the individuals’ requests.

Within a body of the building in which stood a kindergarten and other small productive activities there is Zettel Club, former club / restaurant now converted into a discotheque and a space adaptable to host a variety of events.

The industrial archeology of the place has inspired the work of restructuring and restyling pursued with one goal, to create a contemporary elegance space while preserving the industrial look of the site.

Investement in Public projets meets more and more difficulties :

the proportion between the needs in relation to communities’ necessarily means raises questions about “how” and «how much», the “quality” and the “quantity”.

Nevertheless, can we now be satisfied with a proposal that would only be “functional” and “quantitative” without considering that responsibility we have in the City, and which influences for many years the daily life of thousands of people?

On the scale of time and space of an area, the calculation is exponential and the stakes are major issues .

House with 30,000 Books is a residence for two families, which has a large library between those two dwelling parts. As the name suggests, the number of books the library can store is about 30,000, which almost equals to the number of books that one small public library can store. The library space, sometimes works for bonding two families, sometimes works as a buffer space, is the common property for them and the most spacious place of this house.

About nine years ago, we had co-established a shared office HAPPA across the street from the building and relocated our former office there; we employed to observe the neighborhood through the glass and this building was my most favorite among others on the street.

Hewitt Studios LLP have recently completed the first phase of the conversion and refurbishment of a former nuclear research and engineering building at Berkeley Centre on the Severn Estuary in the UK.

The project provides South Gloucestershire and Stroud College with a renewable energy and engineering skills centre supported by both local enterprise funding and international technology partners, such as Schneider, Welink and Bosch.
