Sonnenhof in Jena, Germany by J. MAYER H. UND PARTNER, ARCHITEKTEN

Wednesday, July 15th, 2015

Article source: J. MAYER H. UND PARTNER, ARCHITEKTEN

Sonnenhof consists of four new buildings with office and residential spaces. Located on a consolidated number of smaller lots in the historical center of Jena, Germany, the separate structures allow for free access through the grounds. Their placement on the outer edges of the plot defines a small-scale outdoor space congruent with the medieval city structure. Its outdoor facilities continue the building’s overall design concept past the edges of the lot. The planned incorporation of commerce, residence, and office enables a flexible pattern of use that also integrates itself conceptually into the surroundings.

Centrexpo Drummondville in Canada by CCM2 architectes + Bilodeau Baril architectes

Wednesday, July 15th, 2015

Article source: CCM2 architectes + Bilodeau Baril architectes

The Centrexpo Drummondville is the most up-to-date exhibition center in the province of Quebec. The building shows the avant gardist side of Drummondville by showing an actual and contemporary image. The designers intend to show a progressive architecture according to the time of the day, a fully glazed building which reveals the activities and dynamism of the location. Different opacity in the fenestration allows to filter natural light at daytime and makes it look like a glowing lantern at night.

Honoré de Balzac high school in Castelnau-le-Lez, France by NBJ architectes

Tuesday, July 14th, 2015

Article source: v2com

The principal idea in the site of the high school Honoré de Balzac de Castelnau-le-Lez  was to reconquer space by a better distribution of constructions in order to create a scale of user-friendliness, as well in the buildings as in the outdoor areas. The first action was to reconsider the current landscape, to bring a functionality to external installations thus conveying true space qualities and to create a total logic of circulation within the site. The constitution of this new urbanity becomes the base of a shared and porous space, generator of exchanges comparable with the strategic constitution of a campus. The nature becomes the vector of a new contemporary urbanity organized around inter-connected buildings.

THE NEWTOWN SCHOOL in Kolkata, West Bengal by Abin Design Studio

Tuesday, July 14th, 2015

Article source: Abin Design Studio

This school façade project came to us at a stage when the construction of the 2 academic blocks was already underway. The blocks were rather generic, with 6 floors of classrooms, labs, and other facilities arranged towards the periphery around matching central courtyards. Our brief was to work within these existing parameters to make a school. So we developed a design program in terms of circulation, movement, ventilation, classrooms and other concerns.”

Praça das Artes Performing Arts Centre in São Paulo, Brazil by Brasil Arquitetura

Tuesday, July 14th, 2015

Article source: Brasil Arquitetura

The Performing Arts Centre Praça das Artes is situated in the centre of São Paulo, an area that has suffered from economic decline and urban degradation for decades. The new complex is inserted into a series of interconnected formerly underused or vacant spaces and can be accessed from three sides of the urban block. The historic building of the former Dramatic and Musical Conservatory and the façade of the Cairo Cinema have been incorporated into the complex and thus gained new significance by providing important physical and symbolic references to the past.

Sarasota County Beach Pavilions in Florida by Sweet Sparkman Architects

Saturday, July 11th, 2015

Article source: Sweet Sparkman Architects

This project is a series of commissioned beach-side park restroom pavilions. Each of these pavilions share a common design signature. The design team used an abstract version of sea-oats, vegetation synonymous with the gulf beaches of Sarasota, to create a continuous theme in the façade. The abstract use of ‘sea-oats’ as a screen element was used to unite the ramp with the building rather than having the ramp appear to be an appendage to the design. The wood ramp system is suspended from the cast-in-place concrete roof slab with stainless steel rods. As one ascends the ramp, the natural preserve encloses the building volumes which are oriented to provide enhanced views of the Gulf of Mexico and Sarasota Bay.
