Izakaya Kinoya in Montréal, Canada by Jean de Lessard

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2014

Article source: Jean de Lessard

For its latest Kinoya, interior designer Jean de Lessard has tapped into the sources to emulate in his design the primary spirit, function and aesthetics of the izakaya[1], as the latter was originally an informal place where people drank beer and sake. The transformation is particularly unusual that it explores through extreme design  intimacy in relationships between people, making of Kinoya a true representation of the unique approach the designer has developed about the different ways of occupying a space.

THE PINCH is a library and community center in Shuanghe Village, Yunnan Province, China. The project is part of a government led reconstruction effort after an earthquake in Sept 2012. The majority of village houses were destroyed, leaving the residents living in tents for up to one year. After the earthquake the government has sponsored new concrete and brick houses and a large central plaza. During the first site visit, the houses remained incomplete and the plaza was a large empty site.

Komachi Building in Tokyo, JAPAN by Akira Koyama + KEY OPERATION INC.

Friday, October 17th, 2014

Article source: Akira Koyama + KEY OPERATION INC.

Facing a street near the JR Ebisu Station circle, the property is a restaurant building principally envisioned for tenants purveying Japanese cuisine. A compact lot of 76 m2 called for securing the most possible tenant floor space. The sky occupancy factor, which would limitthe permitted obstruction of visible sky from land around the lot, was utilized in a study to determine how to gain the most cubic volume for a building. Consequently, the building configuration was set at six levels: tenant space of 48 m2 per level up to the fourth floor with a setback of 50 cm, andan additional setback for the fifth and sixth floors.

Boarding school with canteen in Bozen, Italy by AM3 architetti associati

Wednesday, October 15th, 2014

Article source: AM3 architetti associati

Urban concept

The new boarding school establishes precise space relationships with the context, and to a larger scale, it opens on to the landscape towards MountStelvio and the Müstair Valley. A horizontal volume stands against the retaining wall along the North East boundary and it contains the level drop between the uncultivated land on the mountainside and the ground level of the lot. Transversely the lot is occupied by a “U” shaped volume, whose position is gauged in order to determine immediate and simple connections with the South East boundary lots.  The construction of the new building generates three types of outdoor spaces: a public space to the South which is intended to be a park in direct relationship both with the residual agricultural land and with the school positioned to the North East; a private courtyard with a garden  which all the common facilities over look;a service area to the North which is dedicated to parking lots, facility premises, and to the loading and unloading area of the kitchen.

The project responds to the customer requests who wanted a modern stair but at the same time asked for a safe passage between the floors of the house, so the system of ceiling mounting became the railing of the stairs thus fulfilling this dual task.

Contemporary Art Center in Baia Mare, Romania by Suzana Maria Ciplea

Saturday, October 11th, 2014

Article source: Suzana Maria Ciplea

For the first time since the fall of communism, the Baia Mare’s city government is trying to revitalize the city’s identity, unique in Europe because of the \”The Baia Mare Art School of Painting – (founded in 1896)\” by creating workshops for artists, creative camps, and exhibition spaces. Inspired by this initiative the project that I propose represents a new monument that will historically contribute to this city – a new landmark, daring and poetic, which rebirths the spirit of “The Baia Mare Art School of Painting”. I wish that this city will become a magnet for plastic artists.
