A Bower House in Ontario, Canada by Kariouk Associates

Tuesday, August 30th, 2016

Article source: Kariouk Associates

Bowerbirds /ˈbaʊərbɜrd/ make up the bird family Ptilonorhynchidae. They are renowned for their unique courtship behavior, where males build an elaborate structure in an attempt to attract a mate.

Design Challenge:

The challenge was to design a new home with a view of Lake Erie for a client who did not want to pay the cost of a lakeside property.  Hence, the site he acquired was a very long and narrow lot across the road from other homes and 2,000 feet away from the shore of the lake.  Despite the client’s selection of a less desirable lot, the project was required to serve as a lure for a mate (a love nest as it were, perched in the treetop) complete with two bedrooms for two yet non-existent/future hatchlings.  As such, this love nest aimed to both woo and wow a mate while also demonstrating proper family planning and money-management skills.  The remaining challenge involved the limits set by municipal zoning bylaws that restricted the home’s height to a maximum of “two storeys”.

The Born is a lively and authentic neighborhood in Barcelona characterized by different population and the most diverse shops.  It has a heterogeneous town planning, laid down by narrow streets with old modest houses and streets with old majestic palaces, which have been renovated as a consequence of the tourism demand in this particular district.

GrasSea Ristopescheria in Fondi, Italy by YO.DAA

Friday, August 26th, 2016

Article source: YO.DAA

GrasSea Ristopescheria is located in Fondi, a little city in Italy, near Rome and Naples.

The theme of the project was to embrace with a single architectural gesture the space able to contain the different types of activities that take place inside the building. Fish Market, Restaturant, functional space and external space were to appear as a single continuous space, accessible at the functional level and at the level of perception. The Design also had to be modern, bright and with references to the marine theme, of course, reinterpreted in a modern key. The ceilings with flowing lines and dynamic, the wooden flooring which then becomes the kitchen wall that recalls the jetties piers, the stainless steel doors and windows, the circular windows placed high up on the window, are all internal references to the marine theme. The rest of the lines, including the slots game on the kitchen wall that make it visible, the monobloc bench coated in resin, rimarcate with illumination with specially designed, make the functional environment, just like the modern and dynamic activities that takes place inside it. Particular attention was paid to the lighting sudio. Exist 3 different types of lighting according to requirements. Definitely the most distinctive and visible element is the bright ceiling track that combines all the space visually, and that cuts the wall up to get off the ground. The outdoor area covered attracts more of the classic tavern fishing style, with a ambient and lighting warmer and traditional. Like a path between two different ways of living and seeing the sea. YO.DAA has also worked on the creation of the logo, the creation of the website and the development of the brand, along with the implementation of the architectural design.

Puni Distillery in Glurns, Italy by Werner Tscholl. Architekt

Thursday, August 25th, 2016

Article source: Werner Tscholl. Architekt

The production of 176.000 liters of whisky by Italy’s first and only destillery of this beverage takes place in a building reflecting the company’s pioneer character through a rigorous organization and an expressive façade. Inside the double height of the production zone allows a view to the underground silos and the stills from the store situated at the entrance level. All the functions and the three stories of the building are wrapped within al lattice of cement blocks, colored with soft earth tones, forming a modular scheme as used in farm buildings of the area. So the complex on the outside appears as a simple cube nuanced only by the gaps of the lattice.
