The Self-Assembly Line by Skylar Tibbits

The Self-Assembly Line is a large-scale version of a self-assembly virus capsid, demonstrated as an interactive and performative structure. A discrete set of modules are activated by stochastic rotation from a larger container/structure that forces the interaction between units. The unit geometry and attraction mechanisms (magnetics) ensure the units will come into contact with one another and auto-align into locally-correct configurations. Overtime as more units come into contact, break away, and reconnect, larger, furniture scale elements, emerge. Given different sets of unit geometries and attraction polarities various structures could be achieved. By changing the external conditions, the geometry of the unit, the attraction of the units and the number of units supplied, the desired global configuration can be programmed.

WSDG Begins 16th Art Institute Audio Teaching Studio

NEW YORK:  An intensive 4-year design/construction program by the Walters-Storyk Design Group has produced sixteen professional audio education studios for The Art Institutes’ educational institutions across the U.S.  Developed to train students for jobs in the rapidly expanding sphere of high tech audio-related occupations, the studios provide cutting edge instruction in both theory and hands-on production techniques.  The Art Institute of Michigan (Detroit) complex is currently under construction.

WSDG Partner/Senior Project Manager Romina Larregina has spearheaded the program since its inception. Working closely with company principal/architect/acoustician John Storyk she has supervised each construction project to insure the highest level of pro audio educational professionalism.  “John Storyk’s commitment to education was a primary catalyst behind The Art Institutes decision to retain WSDG for this major assignment,” Larregina says.  “His extensive lecturing background, coupled with our 40-year + history of creating world-class studios for artists ranging from Jimi Hendrix to Alicia Keys and Bruce Springsteen, made us an obvious choice for this expansive, on-going project.”

VoltaDom by Skylar Tibbits

VoltaDom is an installation for MIT’s 150th Anniversary Celebration & FAST Arts Festival (Festival of Arts, Science and Technology),  that populates the corridor spanning building 56 & 66 on MIT’s campus.  This installation lines the concrete and glass hallway with hundreds of vaults, reminiscent of the great vaulted ceilings of historic cathedrals.  The vaults provide a thickened surface articulation and a spectrum of oculi that penetrate the hallway and surrounding area with views and light.  VoltaDom attempts to expand the notion of the architectural “surface panel,” by intensifying the depth of a doubly-curved vaulted surface, while maintaining relative ease in assembly and fabrication.  This is made possible by transforming complex curved vaults to developable strips, one that likens the assembly to that of simply rolling a strip of material.

We propose a contemporary design and architecture for our proposals for the temporary architectures at the Kernel Festival, in the park of Villa Tittoni in Desio.  Our approach is inspired by the shapes, the imagination and the way of thinking of a digital environment and paradigm, through a non standard attitude, parametric geometry and lighting.  This according to the temporary nature of the projects (existing just from the 1st of July to the 3rd of July 2011), a specific attention in the simplicity of the assemblage of the parts, the use of the given construction materials, the photovoltaic panels and the plastic profiles.

We like sustainability, we think is probably on of the most important issue in contemporary architecture.. but we are still architects.. and we like forms and space too… that why we invented the SUNSCRAPER:

This is a project for a tower wrapped by solar panels.  15.277 swinging solar panels have been assembled to create a continuous skin around the building.  The form of our tower wants to be organic and fluid, the perception would be of an architecture quality work and a functioning engine at the same time. We want to re interpret technique adding a formal input to it.  Our effort is to maximize sustainability and energy production creating at the same time a pleasant and contemporary expression of architecture.

“DO IT BEFORE NOT AFTER” – floating structures operation – A new way to think at disaster The worlds is becoming more and more sensitive to the climate changing, that, according to the most reputed studies, will have heavy and often dramatic effects on the earth and on us. Recently very well known dramatic events pushed the citizens, the governments and the organizations to think new and more appropriate strategies in order to provide relief to the population’s victims of these catastrophic natural events. This is the aim of this competition too. In medicine there are mostly two ways to try to reduce the impact of diseases on people; one is to cure and the other one is to prevent. We all know that to prevent is better than to cure.

Cafe Lolita in Ljubljana, Slovenia by Trije arhitekti

Occupying the former warehouse in the central historic palace in Ljubljana, Lolita gives a tribute to a tradition of cafes and the richness of living on the crossroads where one enjoys listening to a variety of everyday stories while brewing one’s own behind a newspaper at the same time.

ECO-Sport Facility in Puerto Rico by Ramirez-Gonzalez Studio, PSC

Proposed by Ramirez-Gonzalez Studio architecture firm, the ECO-Sport Facility is a novel design, which accomplishes the re-engineering of the typical basketball court architecture in Puerto Rico into a sustainable building. The concept was based on the firm’s own philosophy by conceiving ‘Architecture as an Adapted Product’ which permits the project architects to improve the structure environmental output within cost-efficiency parameters from early stages of the design development.

Architecture as an expression of changing times

Kaohsiung city is a port and, as many other ports is in a situation of changing. The reasons of this changing have been very well analysed by many.. factories that move their production somewhere else. the decreasing of the traffic on the sea.. and many others depending on the particular locations. New York and London already provided, at least partially, to reconvert the unused piers or the part of the city close to the sea or the river previously dedicated to the maritime traffic to other destinations and a different life. The case of Kaohsiung is somehow similar, but there is a difference in the conception of the changing and the strategy related. Many cities just dismissed their piers and their warfs because they were useless and decided to dedicate these part of the city to new and different destinations.
