ATRIUM – JUSSIEU UNIVERSITY in Paris, France by Périphériques Architectes

Wednesday, July 13th, 2016

Article source: Périphériques Architectes

The 16m building on the Jussieu university campus, near the historic center of Paris, extends and completes the grid plan that architect Edouard Albert designed in the 60s to serve 45 000 students and researchers. The response formulated by Périphériques Architects for the extension is based on the existing system, where buildings are laid out in a crown configuration; but at the same time, it deforms it: where Albert laid out a single patio, Périphériques Architects have planned two. One of them is covered by the bridge-buildings raised on pilotis to make short-cuts in the ring like circulation itinerary, and forms a “vertical place” that groups all the movements of the buildings. This concrete space opposes its heaviness and hardness to the light-weight metal cladding of its outer skin.

Wednesday, July 13th, 2016

Article source: Collingridge and Smith Architects (CASA)

A very tight programme saw the Children’s centre designed, approved and completed in 9 months.

The building is located on the edge of the Papamoa Beach township and our brief was to create a design that captured the nostalgic kiwi bach (holiday house) feel.

ROC MONDRIAAN in The Hague, Netherlands by Fokkema & Partners Architecten

Sunday, July 10th, 2016

Article source: Fokkema & Partners Architecten

ROC Mondriaan in The Hague officially opened the schools that were renovated by Fokkema & Partners to become a new Hospitality Campus. At the opening, the Mayor of The Hague Van Aartsen stated: ‘This new campus is an asset to the city and for education in the region’. Today more than ever, the school can cooperate with the city and local business opening its facilities for events and meetings. The design by Fokkema & Partners provides the students with a fully equipped and bright learning environment as well as with a vibrant heart where they can practice their skills. Organized around a grand café in the central atrium there are several restaurant “pockets”. These pockets with different hospitality concepts each have their unique style and offer splendid views of the student activity in the preparation kitchens. A new canopy over the entrance accentuates the view into the grand café depot.

Entrée de ville in Bayonne, France by mateo arquitectura

Sunday, July 10th, 2016

Article source: mateo arquitectura

Three interventions make up the proposal:

  1. Marinadour. A dense complex of dwellings on top of a podium of shops and car parks.
  2. The Park generated by reorganizing circulation and segregating the traffic above from pedestrians, with the massive presence of vegetation between the footpaths.
  3. Rivadour. A continuous urban block that follows the river before breaking off towards the city. Permeable on the ground floor.

House E in Linz, Austria by caramel architekten zt gmbh

Friday, July 8th, 2016

Article source: caramel architekten zt gmbh

Located on the periphery of the city, the plot of land offers a spectacular view of Linz, as long as one builds high enough to be able to gaze over the neighbouring properties. That is why the ground storey lies about 6m above street level – with the pleasant side-effect of allowing the garden area to adjoin the living area on the same level to the west and north, despite the extreme slope.

Alfred House in Melbourne, Australia by Andrew Maynard Architects

Friday, July 8th, 2016

Article source: Andrew Maynard Architects

In a Nutshell

Alfred House is an addition and reconfiguration of an existing two storey, two bedroom terrace, with a tired lean-to that had little relationship with the exterior space. The client wanted us to replicate one of our previous projects, Vader House, as they liked the idea of a centralised courtyard.  It was an interesting idea for us to revisit and to evolve, as we were able to push the concept further due to the property’s connection with the laneway. The big challenge was that Alfred had less than half of Vader’s budget.

Chameleon Shotgun in Texas by Zui Ng with ZDES

Thursday, July 7th, 2016

Article source: Zui Ng with ZDES

Situated at Historical Fourth ward Houston, Texas, Shotgun Chameleon (designed and build by Zui Ng with ZDES) is Inspired by Gulf Coast raised shotgun houses and versatility of chameleon skin. The design emphasizes programmatic flexibility and response to climate. The chameleon-like front screen element provides a myriad of facade possibilities to adapt this design to different urban contexts and to a variety of solar/ wind orientations. Possibilities include wood siding painted to blend with the street-scape, billboards where commercial uses are feasible on the ground floor, louvered wood (vertical or horizontal depending on orientation) to allow for breezes while blocking direct sun and providing privacy, solar panel screen to harvest solar energy, or vine covered screens reminiscent of French quarter balconies. As for the alternating wood slats screen on the sides, they provides privacy for both residents and the neighbors while allowing sunlight and wind to move through the house. A double height glass windows frame an ever evolving urban view at the South and a floor to ceiling opening frame the four seasons views of nature at the north.
