Franz Kafka Society Center in Prague, Czech Republic by STEVEN HOLL ARCHITECTS

Sunday, May 1st, 2016

Article source: STEVEN HOLL ARCHITECTS

The basement of the small one-story building, formerly used for laundry and storage, now houses a space for exhibitions, lectures, and concerts, as well as it accommodates Franz Kafka’s private library. On the first level of the building the Franz Kafka Society has located its offices. The previously dark and dismal spaces of the building are now washed in daylight coming through newly inserted windows and skylights that provide unexpected views to the towers of the Maisel Synagogue. Marcela Steinbachová (Skupina) and Steven Holl Architects have deliberately situated these windows off axis to the interiors. Inside the building new visual connections through openings and inspection holes give its small spaces depth and create visual connections.

Wind Tower in UAE by Peter Stasek Architects

Friday, April 29th, 2016

Article source: Peter Stasek Architects

The global climate change leaves visible traces in the environment which sometimes emerge in the form of scars or devastation or simply represent the disappearance of something that has always been present. Humans struggle against this largely selfinflicted new world order and continuously try to slow this process down. The evershrinking glaciers in the high mountains are covered with awnings during summer and the regions which are endangered by sea flooding are equipped with new ramparts and sluices in order to protect the coast. Just as the tsunamis, the hurricanes transform the man-made environment in large stretches of land into a mishmash at one go, which makes it hard to guess what kind of function its components had to fulfill in the past. A new kind of aesthetics defined by chaos.

  • Production/Realization Technology: 3D-sand printed facade patterns with integrated glass fronts, Carbon fiber reinforced polyamide for Down Wind Turbine casing. Wind Tower is situated on an artificial sand island with a road access from the mainland

  • Research Abstract: How to create a building, which is shaped by tsunami and hurricane masses. A new kind of aesthetics generated by chaos.
  • Challenge: A new order generated from chaos. As a new challenge, one could try to develop new urban structures and architectural forms which are not in contrast to but in conformity with the forces of nature which are able to further develop their potential of strength as a result of the global climate change.

Lantern Ridge House in Kerhonkson, New York by Studio MM Architect

Thursday, April 28th, 2016

Article source: Studio MM Architect

Perched at the top of a wooded knoll in the Hudson Valley, the Lantern Ridge House accentuates mountain views while camouflaging itself in the densely forested environment. At night, the typically obscured house becomes a beacon for passing cars and a guiding light for our homeward-bound clients. The home is focused on a single gathering space through which the 2,200 SF structure becomes at once intimate and expansive, private and public. Oriented to face both sunrise and sunset, this hinge point is created by the convergence of two private wings that contain separated accommodations for our clients and their guests. A continuous wood ceiling shelters an exterior deck and the glass façade, which focuses expansive views, connects the clients with the immediate natural environment, and provides a consistently sunlit space.

AB apartment in Milan, Italy by DUEDIQUATTRO

Thursday, April 28th, 2016

Article source: DUEDIQUATTRO

The apartment, located inside a charming early 20th-century building, was completely redesigned in order to better respond to the occupants’ needs, without altering its « retro appeal ». The project therefore mixes a vintage decor with contemporary furniture and 20th century design pieces. The kitchen furniture and the cupboards were custom-designed. The beautiful original windows and wooden floor were kept and restored; in the bathrooms and in the kitchen, instead, the floor and wall tiles, which had been previusly replaced, were changed. In the living room, the elaborated coffered ceiling was restored and repainted; the walls were painted dark green, a strong color which enhances the original decoration and the character of this room.

Vacation Home in Kranjska Gora, Slovenia by Prima d.o.o. architects

Wednesday, April 27th, 2016

Article source: Prima d.o.o. architects

The approach to the project was defined by steep terrain and by the magnificent views that the site offered.  The design follows those two main characteristics first positioning and second by opening of the living quarters towards the south (views towards the mountains) with large glass walls (windows) and with exits on both sides of the house. These smaller more secluded exterior spaces can be used accordingly depending on the hour of the day, the season, wind…etc.

RESTAURANT AIUEnO in Barcelona, Spain by MIEL arquitectos

Tuesday, April 26th, 2016

Article source: MIEL arquitectos

This project is the result of some unconsciousness mixed with a lot of admiration. The unconsciousness came from the side of the clients, Neus and Kenji of Can Kenji team, commissioning his new Japanese restaurant “izakaya” to a team that had never designed a restaurant and not even been in Japan. The admiration is ours to a culture as unknown as admired.

Casa Bosques in Clearwater Bay, Hong Kong by Original Vision Limited

Tuesday, April 26th, 2016

Article source: Original Vision Limited

Casa Bosques is indeed the ‘house in the forest’. The driveway immediately sets the tone with the forest canopy unfolding as one approaches. These mature trees are the principal feature to which every living space, both indoors and out, refer to. It is the ever-present greenness that makes Casa Bosques special.
